Roland wrestler wins title at Warner Eagles Classic
WARNER — Roland Rangers wrestler Channing McKinney took home gold from the Warner Eagles Classic, which took place Nov. 25 at Warner Event Center.
Wrestling at 195 pounds in the middle school division, McKinney, who got a first-round bye, pinned Jose Hernandez of Van Buren, Ark., in 58 seconds in the quarterfinals, pinned Van Buren Junior High School’s Jason Sanabrya in 1:59 in the semifinals and pinned Lincoln Christian’s Callum Campbell in 1:18 in the title match.
At 190 pounds in the high school division, Drew Simpson was third after pinning Hilldale’s Mason Turner in 1:25 in the third-place match. Simpson was pinned by Poteau’s Garrett Finchum in the quarterfinals, but Simpson bounced back with pinfall wins over Heavener’s Jace Moore (3:26) and Heavener’s Lucas Corbin (3:26) to reach the third-place match.
Austin Foster, wrestling at 138 pounds in the high school division, finished fourth after losing the third-place match 4-1 to Prague’s Gentry Ward. Foster opened by losing by pinfall to Hillsdale’s Coltyn Majors, then got a consolation first-round bye before beating Hilldale’s Gabe Corbett by pinfall in 5:14 in the consolation quarterfinals and pinning Hilldale’s Braxxden Bruner in 5:44 in the consolation semifinals to get to the third-place match.
Kacen Copeland, wrestling at 112 pounds in the middle school division, got to the consolation semifinals before being eliminated. He pinned Sallisaw Middle School wrestler Xander Montgomery in 1:55 but lost in the quarterfinals to Van Buren JH’s Layton Stewart by pinfall before pinning Poteau’s Mannix Lum (1:37) and Poteau’s Sebastian Walker (1:21) to get to the consolation semifinals, where Copeland lost 8-3 to Lincoln Christian’s Michael Maderazo.
Cash Nelson, wrestling at 126 pounds in the high school division, got a first-round bye before losing 11-1 to Heavener’s Jerred Boss in the quarterfinals. After getting a consolation bye, Nelson then lost by technical fall to Greenwood (Ark.) High School wrestler Ashton Neece.
Wrestling at 157 pounds in the high school division, Miguel Chavez got an opening-round bye before losing by pinfall to Poteau’s Bryer Cross and falling by technical fall to Hilldale’s Karter Mitchell.
Lucas Younger, wrestling at 165 pounds in the high school division, lost both of his matches, losing by pinfall to Sallisaw’s Talon Flynn and falling 8-7 to Poteau’s Rafael Antonio.
Trevor Nelson, wrestling at 175 pounds in the high school boys division, was pinned by Warner’s Lubbock Drake, got a consolation first-round bye and lost by pinfall to Heavener’s Daniel Rosales.
At heavyweight in the high school division, Abraham Nichols went 2-2. After losing in the opening round by pinfall to Bethel’s Alex Barnett and getting a consolation opening-round bye, Nichols beat Sallisaw Middle School’s Hayden Barker 5-3 and pinned Warner’s Kadein Shanks in 5:13 before losing to Barnett once more by pin in the consolation semifinals.
In the junior high division, Tommy Greshcke, wrestling at 106 pounds, finished fourth after losing the thirdplace match to Lincoln Christian’s Corde Williams by pinfall. After getting a firstround bye, Greshcke beat Williams by pinfall in 5:26 in the quarterfinals before losing by technical fall to Lincoln Christian’s Arion Stokes in the semifinals before beating Checotah Junior High School wrestler Owen Oleson by pinfall in 5:56 in the consolation semifinals.
Jerry Crossno, wrestling at 112 pounds in the junior high division, went 2-2. He opened with a technical fall over Poteau’s Sawyer Watkins and beat Bethel Middle School’s Andy Hartmann by pinfall in two minutes exactly in the quarterfinals, but then lost by pinfall to Van Buren JH’s Layton Stewart in the semifinals and was pinned by Lincoln Christian’s Andrew Araskog in the consolation semifinals.
Wrestling at 126 pounds in the JH division, Jaxen Madison also went 2-2. After pinning Lincoln Christian’s Asher Clark-Howell in 57 seconds in the opening round, Madison lost by pinfall to Hilldale’s Cale Spaulding in the quarterfinals. After pinning Warner Junior High School’s Kayden Rogers in 1:48 in the second round of consolation, Madison lost in the consolation quarterfinals by pinfall to Prague’s Kace Smith.
Matthew McGhee, wrestling at 126 pounds in the junior high division, carded a 2-2 record on the day. He opened with a pinfall win over Rogers in 5:12, but then lost in the quarterfinals to Lincoln Christian’s Drake Sheffield by pinfall. After pinning Wilburton’s Seiler Ramirez in 5:49 in the second round of consolation, McGhee lost by pinfall to Hilldale’s Kaiser Gray in the consolation quarterfinals.
