SALLISAW WRESTLING

Black Diamonds, Lady Diamonds lose road duals

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

POTEAU — It was a tough night on the mats for the Sallisaw High School wrestling teams as they each lost their respective dual to the host Poteau Lady Pirates and Pirates on Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.

The Lady Diamonds lost 33-30, while the Black Diamonds fell 57-18.

In the high school girls’ dual, the Lady Diamonds (0-1 in duals this season) Piper Hert and Emilie Robbins won their matches by pinfall, while Taylor Archuleta, Mikaylynn Gaghins and Jaime Martin all won by forfeit.

In the high school boys’ dual, the Black Diamonds (0-1 in duals this season) got a pinfall win by 113-pounder Cason Craft and 157-pounder Cole Mayfield, both of Sallisaw’s returning state champions. Rangler Carter got a forfeited win at 106 pounds.

The one bright spot on the night was the Lady Diamonds won the junior high dual against the Lady Pirates by a score of 48-17, while the Black Diamonds JH wrestlers were nipped 36-34 by the Pirates.

After the Sallisaw wrestling teams had their home-opening duals Thursday night against Salina and Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside, the Black Diamonds will return to action Jan. 3-4 at the Diamond State Duals at Springdale (Ark.) Har-Ber High School, while the Lady Diamonds will hit the mats Jan. 10 at the Inola Tournament.
