Roland girls repeat as county champions

The 2025 Sequoyah County Classic host Roland Lady Rangers repeated as champions with a 40-27 win over the archrival Muldrow Lady Bulldogs in Monday night’s title game at the Ranger Dome.

The Muldrow Bulldogs took the boys title with a 57-47 victory over the Central Tigers to win their first SCC title since 2022.

There were only four games that took place Monday on the final day of the county tournament, which was hampered by Thursday’s snowstorm which postponed action in the SCC on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

When the final day of action could not take place until Monday, it kept the Gore teams — which already had four games slated this week — and the Stigler squads from returning.

So, the Vian teams, which were to have faced Gore’s squads in the consolation title games, filled the void left by the absences of the Stigler teams, who were to have meet the Central Lady Tigers and the SCC host Roland Runnin’ Rangers in the third-place games.

Thus, it was somewhat of a combined third-place/consolation championship match-up in the first two games on Monday.

The Lady Tigers handled the Lady Wolverines 62-39, while the Runnin’ Rangers ran past the Wolverines 76-48. The Central girls and the Roland boys received the third-place plaques, while the Vian teams were awarded the consolation championship plaques.

GIRLS

ROLAND 40, MULDROW 27

With the game tied at 20-all at halftime, the Lady Rangers (73) put some distance between them and the Lady Bulldogs (56) in the third quarter as Roland outscored Muldrow 12-3 in the period to take a 32-23 lead into the final period.

Haven Freeman led Roland with a game-high 15 points, followed by Ryanne Nelke with nine points, Halle Freeman with seven points, Molly Carver with five points and Julianna Trujillo with four points.

In defeat, Maysi Fields led Muldrow with 13 points, followed by Kilah Ellingberg and Kayla Ellingberg with five points each and Gracie Prewett and Jensi Fields with two points apiece.

BOYS

MULDROW 57, CENTRAL 47

The opening quarter saw nine lead changes. When the first period ended, it was the Bulldogs (7-4) who had the lead at 14-11.

The Tigers (6-4) used a 9-6 run, capped by Braxin Goodson’s 3-point basket with 3:21 left before halftime, to knot the game at 20-all.

However, the ’Dogs ended the first half on a 9-0 run, capped by a free throw by Teaguen Collins with 38 seconds remaining in the first half, to send Muldrow into the halftime lead at 29-20. From there, the Bulldogs never relinquished the lead.

Muldrow outscored Central 18-11 in the third quarter to up the advantage to 47-31 going into the fourth quarter.

For the game, Muldrow put three players into double figures, led by Parker Sevenstar’s game-high 13 points, followed by Collins with 11 points and DeShawn Willson with 10 points. Jesse Kilinc had nine points, followed by D.J. Massey with eight points, E.J. Zanders with four points and Jack Pyeatt with two points.

In defeat, Goodson led Central with 12 points, followed by Aidan Sainer with nine points, Josh Brunk and Paitton Merrill with six points each, Gavin Randolph with five points, Noah Buzzard with three points and Joe Brooks, Hardy Buzzard and Kyle Reed with two points apiece.

GIRLS

CENTRAL 62, VIAN 39

The Lady Tigers (7-3) scored the game’s first six points of the game en route to a 17-5 lead after a quarter, but the Lady Wolverines (2-6) cut their deficit to 25-17 at halftime.

However, any Vian comeback was quickly put to sleep by Central, which outscored Vian 21-11 in the third quarter to send the Lady Tigers into the final period ahead 46-28.

For the game, Haley Cheek scored a game-high 20 points to lead Central, followed by Cambree Bair with 13 points, Hadlie Woods with 12 points, Ayrland Jiles with seven points, Paris Campbell with four points and Zoey Lattimore, Sarah Buchanan and Cheyenne Busch with two points apiece.

In defeat, Halli Russell led Vian with 18 points, followed by Avery Wright with nine points, Jaiden Soap with four points, Blazi Dieter with three points, Rebel Simon and Rayleigh Terrill with two points each and Shelbie Glass with a free throw.

BOYS

ROLAND 76, VIAN 48

Vian’s Joe O’Neal hit a basket to cut the deficit for the Wolverines (3-5) to 5-4 with 5:33 left in the first quarter. That ended up being as close as they got.

The Runnin’ Rangers (9-1) ended the first period on an 18-8 run to take a 2312 lead into the second quarter.

Roland kept increasing the lead from there, taking a 43-23 lead at halftime and a 61-30 advantage after three quarters.

For the game, Mason Kemp led Roland with a game-high 21 points, followed by Damonte Owens with 18 points, Buck Triplett with 11 points, Kade Shook and Kayden Hartt with seven points each, Raesean Perryman and Landon Fowler each with four points and Nate Criswell and Josh Bower with two points apiece.

In defeat, O’Neal scored 18 points and Cash Trammel added 11 points to lead Vian, followed by Trace Sanders with six points, Masyn Wright and Caden Brannick with four points each, Kyle King with three points and Jacob Brannick with two points.
