Black Diamonds blank Broken Bow

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds baseball team finally got to see some action for the first time since April 1, and they showed no signs of rust as the Black Diamonds blanked the Broken Bow Savages 12-0 in a five-inning, District 4A-8 game Monday evening at Sallisaw High School.

Creed Nelson (5-0) stayed perfect on the mound this season as he threw a five-inning six-hitter with six strikeouts.

All the run support Nelson needed the Black Diamonds (152 overall, 6-0 in district play) got in the opening inning as an RBI double by Dagan Grizzle and a two-RBI single by Brodie Cameron put Sallisaw up 3-0.

After the Savages (13-4, 5-2) got their first hit to get their first baserunner in the second inning, the Black Diamonds put a four-spot up in their half of the frame as a pair of RBI fielder’s choices by Connor Green and Nelson and RBI singles by Rylan Eagle and Cameron upped Sallisaw’s advantage to 7-0 after two innings.

A sacrifice fly by Nelson, a Broken Bow error and a basesloaded walk for an RBI for Cameron increased the Black Diamonds’ lead to 10-0 after three innings to put the game into run-rule status.

Sallisaw reached a dozen runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Green and an RBI double by Nelson.

For the game, Cameron was 2-for-2 with four runs batted in, Broque Oft was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Nelson had a double and three RBIs, Grizzle doubled with an RBI and a run scored and Caleb Hightower, courtesy running for Green, scored twice for Sallisaw.
