Lady Diamonds riding 4-game winning streak

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds softball team equalled its longest winning streak since 2022 — the season in which they won the Class 4A District Tournament — as they entered this week on a four-game winning streak.

After sweeping a road District 4A-6 doubleheader against Idabel on Aug. 19, the Lady Diamonds kept the winning streak going with an 8-6 road district victory over Stigler on Thursday afternoon, then capped the week with a 6-4 come-from-behind home victory over the Vian Lady Wolverines on Friday afternoon at Sallisaw High School’s “Turf of Dreams” in a game that got moved from its original date of noon this Saturday.

Monday’s home game against Class 2A powerhouse Pocola was rained out, with no makeup date scheduled as of press time.

In the road win over Stigler, the Lady Diamonds (6-5 overall, 3-2 in district play) fell behind 6-3 after four innings but rallied with a three-run fifth inning to tie the game at 6-all after five innings.

A two-run seventh inning broke the tie to give the Lady Diamonds the come-frombehind victory.

For the game, Jaycie Cox was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in, Natalie Gonzales was 2-for-4, Delaney Compton was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Brinley Mills was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Abby Webb was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored, JoLee Curson was 2-for-4 and Channing Wilson doubled and score once for Sallisaw.

Compton (5-5) got the win, striking out dive batters in seven innings.

In Friday’s home win over Vian, the Lady Diamonds broke a 4-all tie with a two-run fifth inning.

The Lady Wolverines (5-6) took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lady Diamonds tied the game at 4-all with a single run in the first inning and a three-run third inning, which was started with Sydney Weedon’s solo lead-off home run, her third homer of the season.

For the game, Wilson was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Weedon was 2-for-3 with her third homer of 2025.

Compton got the win, getting five Ks in seven innings and throwing a four-hitter.

In defeat, Tinley Gibson doubled with an RBI, LaKoeta Cheater singled and scored once, Sidney Cox singled with an RBI and Halli Russell singled for Vian. Cassidee Postoak (5-6) suffered the loss, despite getting three strikeouts in six innings.
