Waukomis ends Webbers Falls football season for 2nd straight year

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

WAUKOMIS — For the second straight year, the Waukomis Chiefs ended the football season for the Webbers Falls Warriors, as the Chiefs defeated the Warriors 56-30 in Friday night’s Class B, Division II opening-round playoff game at Lovell Field.

The Chiefs (8-3) will travel to meet the Weleetka Outlaws (11-0) at 7 p.m. this Friday in the Class B, Division II state quarterfinals.

The Warriors ended the season at 6-5.

“Anytime you can win more than you lose, it’s a successful season,” Webbers Falls coach Trent Holt said. “We made the playoffs, so that’s a plus.”

Down 16-0 in the first quarter, the Warriors cut their deficit in half as Gunner Shelby caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brutus Robinson, who scored the two-point conversion, to cut the Waukomis lead in half at 16-8 after quarter.

In the last minute of the first half, Robinson intercepted the ball in the end zone, making it look like the Warriors were going to go into the locker rooms down eight points.

However, the Warriors fumbled the ball, with the Chiefs making the recovery.

With 30 seconds left before halftime, the Chiefs scored a TD to go up 22-8 at halftime.

On the second half kickoff, after the Warriors bottled up Waukomis return man Mehsyn Phelan, Phelen rambled 70 yards for a touchdown to put the Chiefs ahead 30-8.

“In a matter of about 10 seconds of game time, we get down 30-8,” Holt said. ‘That just killed us. I’m not saying we would have beaten them, but we would have been right there (only down 16-8).”

The Warriors’ only touchdown in the third quarter came on a 60-yard TD pass from Robinson to Trysten Wilbourn as Webbers Falls entered the final period down 42-14.

The Warriors got two touchdown passes from Robinson in the fourth quarter, a 29-yarder to Rocky Greenfield, while Wilbourn caught his second TD pass, a 40-yarder. Robinson hit Wilbourn on the twopoint conversion pass play after Greenfield’s touchdown reception, while Robinson hit Shelby for the other two-point conversion.

“I kept preaching (to the kids) that I didn’t want to look back after playing this game, and say, ‘We did this and this’,” Holt said. “That’s kind of what we’re doing right now, if we don’t give up that fumble right at the half and if we don’t do that (not tackle the Waukomis return man), we’re still right there. In the middle of the third quarter, we’re just down a touchdown.”

In defeat, Robinson had 254 yards passing, with Wilbourn getting 186 yards receiving. Defensively, Shelby, Robinson and Greenfield each had an interception, while Greenfield also had a caused fumble.
