Wolverines avenge state finals loss to Davis, advance to title game against undefeated Adair
HARRAH — The Vian Wolverines not only advanced to the Class 2A, Division II state football title game, but in so doing they avenged last year’s state finals loss to the Davis Wolves.
The Wolverines blanked the Wolves 21-0 in Friday night’s state semifinal game after Davis dashed Vian’s hopes at a perfect season a year ago with a 28-18 state championship game victory almost a year to the day at Chad Richison Stadium at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
The second-ranked Wolverines (121), winners of 11 straight games since a Week 2 loss at Kiefer, will meet the top-ranked Adair Warriors (13-0) at high noon Friday at UCO. The Wolverines will be seeking their first state championship since 1971.
After a scoreless first quarter, Ledger Folsom caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Cash Trammel on the final play of the first half. Trammel’s extra point gave Vian a 7-0 halftime lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Wolverines scored 14 points within 55 seconds to seal the deal.
Masyn Wright scored on a 31-yard TD run. Trammel’s PAT doubled Vian’s advantage to 14-0 with 9:34 left to play in the game.
Just 55 seconds later, Michael Polecat picked off a Davis pass and rambled 31 yards for the pick-6 with 8:29 remaining to play. Trammel kicked the extra point.
When the two teams met in last year’s state final, the Wolverines had four turnovers, three of which were directly turned into 21 points.
In last Friday night’s rematch, the Wolverines did not commit a turnover and pitched a shutout of the Wolves, who threw two interceptions — Polecat’s 31-yard touchdown interception return and a pick by Wright.
For the game, Wright rushed for 216 yards and scored a TD while catching an 18-yard pass from Trammel, who threw for 35 yards and a touchdown. Folsom caught two passes from Trammel, including the first score of the night at the halftime buzzer.
