Sallisaw get pre-Christmas sweep over Stigler

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

STIGLER — For the second time in a row last week, the Sallisaw High School basketball teams got a sweep of their opponents by complete opposite methods.

Just as the Sallisaw Lady Diamonds ran away from Stilwell in their home game Dec. 16 at Paul Post Field House, they did the same to the host Stigler Lady Panthers on Thursday as they won 60-12.

After the Black Diamonds had a thrilling overtime win over Stilwell at home Dec. 16, they had another tough game in which they prevailed once more as they defeated the host Stigler Panthers 62-52.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Diamonds (5-2) only led 8-1 after a quarter, but they put away the game with a 23-4 second period to take a 31-5 halftime advantage, which became a 53-9 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Sallisaw put a trio of players into double figures, led by Channing Wilson’s game-high 14 points and 12 points each from Alayna Locust-Trammell and Katelyn Carlton. Emma Martin and Hannah Palmer scored six points each, followed by Kaycie Girdner with five points, Jaycie Cox and Kynli Adams each with two points and JoLee Curson with a free throw.

In the boys’ contest, the Black Diamonds (4-3) trailed 12-8 after a period but cut their deficit to 2321 at halftime.

The Black Diamonds took control of the game in the third quarter as they outscored the Panthers 29-7 to take a 50-30 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Sallisaw’s boys also put three players into double figures, led by Asa Ulrich with 18 points, followed by Brodi Nickell with 16 points and Rowdi Nickell with 12 points. Tae Muskrat-Flynn and Grayson Griffey each scored six points, while Elijah Hill and Luke Warner scored two points apiece.

The Sallisaw teams will be idle until home games Jan. 6 against Heavener, with the girls’ game at 6 p.m. and the boys’ contest at 7:30 p.m., before playing in the Henryetta Knights Tournament, which will take place Jan. 8-10.
