Area schools will provide student meals starting Monday
Area schools will provide breakfast and lunches for students on a grab-and-go basis or delivery starting Monday and continuing as long as Oklahoma public schools remain closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.
The Oklahoma State Board of Education closed all public schools until April 6 at an emergency board meeting on March 16 because of the coronavirus outbreak. The state board is scheduled to have its March regular meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday in Oklahoma City.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister said the board would re-evaluate the situation at that meeting, and could, if necessary, extend the shutdown.
At the March 16 meeting, Hofmeister said the state Department of Education had received a U.S. Department of Agriculture waiver to allow schools to provide meals for students during school closure.
The waivers allow for grab-and-go sites as well as delivery, Hofmeister said. Methods for getting meals to the students would be determined by the individual school districts, she said.
Here are the meal distribution plans for area school districts. All plans will start Monday. A plan for Gans public schools was unavailable at noon Friday.
