Batchelder Honored for 25 Years of Service
Marlene (Tootle) Batchelder was only 19 when she first began working for Agent Funeral Home in Sallisaw.
“Twenty five years later, Batchelder is still working for the same company which has a new name, a new location and has added a few other similar businesses in other locations.
“I don't really have a title but they call me a financial and compliance manager or superglue because I keep it all together,” she said, jokingly.
Batchelder said she “handles all the money” for the funeral service providers located in Sallisaw, Spiro, Stigler, Heavener and in Muskogee and a few other small chapels with limited services in other areas.
“I do the bookkeeping, accounts payable and accounts receivable for all the businesses. I'm the money girl,” she said.
Batchelder said 25 years ago, she was working for Neil and Rick Agent at their old location on Chickasaw street. She also worked with her mother Lela Tootle who retired in 2006.
“I love my job and the people I work with,” Batchelder said.
“I love the fact that we help people in the business we're in. Rarely does a day go by that I don't feel like working.”
“Marlene's been a very dedicated and extremely competent employee for the past 25 years for Agent and now Agent & Mallory-Martin,” Todd Martin, owner said.
“She's very dependable and good at what she does.”
Martin said Agent & Mallory-Martin moved to its present location on Wheeler Street in 2013. The funeral home business was established in 1896 and has been in service for over 100 years.
Batchelder, who lives in Sallisaw, has one son Logan, 14, whom she spends most of her time with “mainly road trips and trying out “new experiences.”
“I feel like our staff is the best here. You have to want to work here to work here,” she said, noting there are eight full-time and a few part-time employees.
“It's been a good 25 years here and hoping for another 25 years,” she said, smiling.
“I told them they weren't ever going to get rid of me.”
