Tulsa woman dies in I-40 accident
A fatality collision that occurred early Friday afternoon on U.S. Interstate-40 approximately one mile west of Vian has claimed the life of a 71-year-old Tulsa woman.
According to a report issued by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Kyle Henson, Shirley Courtney, 71, was traveling eastbound in a 2017 Ford Escape at mile marker 296 when the vehicle departed the roadway to the right for unknown reasons and struck a tree.
Courtney was reportedly pronounced deceased at the scene by Pafford EMS personnel while her passenger, Ingrid Hewett, 91, of Oklahoma City was transported to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark. where she was admitted in stable condition for trunk internal and head injuries.
The condition of the driver and the cause of the collision were still under investigation as of press time. The trooper noted that both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Henson was assisted on the scene by Trooper Dustin Jenson, Vian Police Department, Vian Fire Department, Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department, and Pafford EMS.
