Two officers on leave following shooting

Suspect died from wound

Two Sallisaw police officers have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation into a deadly officer-involved shooting Thursday gets underway.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane said the investigation has been turned over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

The suspect in the shooting died from his wounds after being transferred to Northeastern Health System Sequoyah Hospital in Sallisaw.

A statement from the OSBI said at 9:07 a.m., the Sallisaw Police Department received a call reporting a suspicious person walking along U.S. Highway 59. The caller said the individual appeared to match the description of an inmate that reportedly escaped from Missouri. Sallisaw officers made contact with 27-year-old Shawn Taylor Watie, 27, of Stilwell. Watie came after the officers with a weapon, which was a knife, at which point Watie was shot by the officers.

The two Sallisaw officers rendered aid on Watie until EMS arrived. He was transported to Northeastern Health System Sequoyah Hospital where he died, the OSBI said.

Traffic along U.S Highway 59 north had to be diverted for several hours to the southbound lane as law enforcement cordoned off the scene of the shooting.

The names of the two officers involved are not being released at this time.

Lane said the suspect that died in Thursday's shooting “was definitely not” the escapee from Missouri.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy, and the OSBI is still investigating.
