Vandals damage Peters Cemetery
“It’s a shame, a disgrace and disrespectful,” Jim Rogers, Sequoyah County District 3 Commissioner, referring to the recent vandalism of Peters Cemetery, located east of the Sequoyah County Fairgrounds.
Rogers said he believes sometime around when school began, vandals attempted to burn or destroy about 20 to 35 headstones at the cemetery and he was unaware of the incident until a family member reported it. “Some of the headstones were turned or knocked over and some you could tell the vandals attempted to burn some of them. I don’t know how they would have thought you could burn a headstone but it was obvious they tried,” Rogers said. “The whole thing doesn’t make sense. Folks have their moms and dads, children and other family buried here. I just don’t understand what would make a person do this.” Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane said his office will be investigating and anyone who has information can contact his office. Lane sent his inmate work crew to clean up the cemetery Thursday and replace some of the headstones back to their position. “We don’t have any leads yet. We don’t even know when this was done but we will be looking into it,” Lane said.
