Brushy School reports positive COVID case

Brushy School Superintendent Greg Reynolds notified parents Aug. 10 that a Brushy School employee tested positive for COVID-19.

In the notification, Reynolds said, “While we must protect the privacy of the individual involved, we believe it is best to communicate with you so you can make well-informed decisions for your family. Our greatest priority is the safety of our students, staff and community members. Brushy School closely follows COVID-19 related guidelines.”

Few concerns expressed over absentee ballots

In recent days, there has been concern over absentee, or mail-in voting, and whether or not it will be secure and timely.

Sequoyah County Election Board Secretary Cindy Osborn said Monday there have been a few calls from voters concerned about what is going to happen and is it okay to vote absentee.

“We haven't had any problems at all,” Osborn said. “So far, we've mailed out about 800 applications, which is more than what we did for the election in June.”

Superintendent decides not to go with Black and Orange Schedule

Sallisaw School Superintendent Randy Wood said Thursday the school will begin on Aug. 24 with the traditional classroom instruction as opposed to the Orange and Black Rotation which is still an option if needed.

During a special meeting last week, the Sallisaw School Board approved a handbook which included a guide for the Orange and Black Rotation Schedule which was initially how the school year would begin, as was reported last week.

Board approves re-entry plan

The Sallisaw School Board held a special meeting Wednesday to discuss and approve a Re-Entry Plan for students and faculty when classes begin Aug. 24.

They also approved the 2020-21 school year calendar and a handbook for Chromebook.

Sallisaw Superintendent Randy Wood addressed each item on the plan which may be updated frequently “based on the changing and fluid environment of the COVID-19 situation,” he said.
