City hopes to light up walking trail

Attempting to put the finishing touches on the walking trail at the Sports Complex, the City of Sallisaw will apply for a grant to purchase solar lighting for the one-mile trail.

The city held a public hearing about the grant application Wednesday and did not receive any negative comments.

According to George Bormann, director of economic development for the city, the city is applying for the recreational grant through the Land and Water Conservation Fund through the Oklahoma Department of Tourism.

AG brief seeks guidance on cases affected by McGirt

District 27 District Attorney Jack Thorp said the district is basically in a holding pattern on what to do about challenges to sentences by inmates convicted of crimes committed on tribal lands.

Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter announced Tuesday he plans to file a brief with the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals in response to the “flood of inmates challenging their state convictions on historic tribal lands, including those lands not associated with the Muskogee (Creek) Nation.
