Memorial service and Committal of Cremains for Howard Jerry Johnson, 95, of Sallisaw, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith, Ark. Services are under the direction of Agent & Mallory-Martin Funeral Service Inc.
He was born on Sept. 28, 1923, in Earlsboro to Cap Tolia Johnson and Martha Joanna Hall Johnson. He passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, in Fayetteville, Ark. He was married to Doris Walker Johnson on Feb. 28, 1958, in Midwest City.
He was a real estate broker and appraiser, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of First Baptist Church in Sallisaw.
Survivors are his wife, Doris of the home; one son, Barrett Ashley Johnson of Fayetteville; six nieces, Carolyn Johnson of Washington, D.C., Sandy Johnson Price of Phoenix, Deborah Cheek Sparks of Tulsa, Joella Tanner of Branson, Mo., Margaret Johnson of Oregon and Beverly Morris of Seminole; six nephews, Mike Cornelison of Ada, Mark Cornelison of Checotah, Gerald Walker of Tahlequah, Robert Johnson of Oregon, Ronnie Johnson of Seminole and Billy Johnson of Seminole; one great-nephew, Dr. Gid R. Johnson of Longview, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cap and Martha Johnson; five brothers; and three sisters.
Mr. Johnson was a veteran of World War II, The Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, being decorated with the following medals: World War II Victory Medal; American Theater Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal Bronze Clasp w/3 Loops; Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; National Defense Service Medal; Air Force Longevity Service Award w/3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; and Air Force Commendation Medal.
During his service in the Department of Defense (Army Air Corps World War II/U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army) he had many significant assignments: MOS 502 Chief Clerk (Airplane/Engine Mechanics Training); Court Reporter (Gregg Shorthand/Stenomask); Flightline Technician (World War II Troubleshooter); Jet Propulsion Experimental Test Stand Technician (Power Plant Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio); Staff Member of two Major Air Commanders; Staff Member of Command Group, Headquarters European Command, Paris, France; Legal Services Superintendent & Administrative Services Superintendent at Major Command levels.
Civilian Accomplishments: Past President, Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce; Past President, Sallisaw High School Band Parents’ Organization; Chairman, Bicentennial Wagontrain Pilgrimage to Pennsylvania (Sallisaw); Past Treasurer, Sallisaw Parent Teachers’ Organization; Past Vice-President, Sequoyah /LeFlore County Real Estate Board; Past First Vice Commander American Legion Post 27 Sallisaw; Real Estate Broker (Arkansas and Oklahoma); Real Estate Appraiser, formerly certified with HUD (FHA), VA in Arkansas and Oklahoma; Independent Fee Appraiser; One of the first brokers selling real estate online in 1975 (Reinet); Assistant Treasurer, First Baptist Church, Sallisaw; and Realty Officer (Civilian) Fort Chaffee, Ark.
Honorary pallbearers will be all United States Veterans.
