High School Football: Vian blanks Sequoyah-Tahlequah 49-0

TAHLEQUAH — Vian’s defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns and its offense threw for two touchdowns and ran for three others as the Class 2A No. 2 Wolverines downed Sequoyah 49-0 on Friday night at Tommy Thompson Field in a District 2A-5 high school football contest.

Vian improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the district with its fourth-straight victory and Sequoyah dropped to 2-4 and 1-2.

The Wolverines got on the board with 7:58 left in the opening period when Xavin Lackey caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Javyn Wright before Elijah Mendoza kicked the extra point. Two key plays in the six-play, 65-yard scoring drive were a 16-yard run by quarterback River Simon and a 40-yard run by tailback Bodhi Vann.

The Wolverines’ second scoring drive of the half, which covered 83 yards and used up almost eight minutes of the clock, was capped off by Wright’s 1-yard touchdown run on second-and-goal with 9:11 to go in the second quarter. Javyn Wright’s 14-yard completion to Elijah Wright and a pass interference penalty against Sequoyah helped key the drive.

Less than two minutes later Gray Cloud returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown and Mendoza’s PAT made the score 21-0.

On Vian’s third offensive possession of the half, runs of 21 and 25 yards by Cloud moved Vian from its 25 to the Sequoyah 29, and two plays later Javyn Wright ran for a 21-yard touchdown, thanks in part to a block on the perimeter by Elijah Wright.

With under a minute remaining before the intermission, Sequoyah’s offense took over at the Wolverines’ 9 after Ty Fixin recovered a Vian muff on a punt by the Indians. On third-and-goal Mendoza picked off a pass in the middle of the end zone to end the scoring threat.

An interception by the Indians’ Trenton Harris near midfield ended Vian’s last possession of the half with the Wolverines on top 28-0.

After receiving the second-half kickoff the Wolverines wasted little time in adding to their advantage. A 24-yard reception by Elijah Wright and a personal foul penalty against the Indians took the ball to the Sequoyah 28, and on the next snap Simon tossed a touchdown pass to Wright with 10:52 to go in the third.

Less than two minutes later Solomon Wright returned an interception 25 yards for Vian’s sixth TD of the night. On the play, Lackey pressured Sequoyah quarterback Landon Girty.

Vian started its final scoring drive of the night from its 45 almost midway through the third period. Solomon Wright ran for eight yards on first down before Cloud raced 47 yards for the touchdown. Mendoza’s extra point with 6:06 left in the third ended the scoring.

We came out and played well and got on them early,” Vian head coach Gary Willis said. “Our defense has been playing well and they got two defensive scores. That was good to see. They were doing some things inside so the inside running was a little rough early but we kind of challenged our guys and got them going and I thought they looked pretty good. We were able to throw it around a little bit so it was a good night overall. It (passing) should help to back those safeties up a little bit when we play those good teams. River threw well and Javyn threw pretty well. That’s a little added dimension that will help.”

Simon completed 4 of 6 passes for 70 yards and Javyn Wright was 3 of 5 for 39 yards in the game. Elijah Wright (4 catches for 81), Vann (2 for 18) and Lackey (1 for 10) had the receptions.

Cloud (4 carries for 97 yards) was the game’s leading rusher and Vian’s next top four rushers were Vann (15 for 88), Lackey (4 for 26), Simon (4 for 25) and Javyn Wright (4 for 22).

The Wolverines host Westville on Friday and Sequoyah takes on Holland Hall at home.
