High School Football: Vian cages Cougars 55-0
Vian tuned up for the Class 2A playoffs on Senior Night Friday inside St. John Stadium with a 55-0 District 2A-5 high school football victory over Keys.
The shut out was the No. 10 Wolverines’ fifth of the season.
Vian scored three touchdowns in the opening period to go in front 21-0. Bodhi Vann’s 16-yard touchdown run got things started with 9:46 remaining, and almost five minutes later the senior running back raced 41 yards for his second TD of the night. Quarterback Javyn Wright completed a 5-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver Elijah Wright with 30 seconds left and the Wolverines led 21-0 after Elijah Mendoza kicked his third extra point of the quarter.
Elijah Wright caught a 20-yard touchdown throw from Javyn Wright at the 8:15 mark of the second stanza, and with 2:58 to go before the half Whitt Fletcher crossed the goal line after a 14-yard run. Mendoza’s two PATs in the period put the Wolverines in front 35-0 at the intermission.
In the third quarter Vann ran for a 74-yard touchdown with 9:37 left and reserve quarterback Zane Craighead found the end zone after a 3-yard run with 2:04 left. Mendoza’s kicks made the score 49-0 going to the fourth period.
In the final frame Dylan Creager rushed for a 30-yard touchdown with 8:37 left but the kick failed.
Vian head coach Gary Willis was pleased with his team’s performance on Friday night.
“We’ve really been preaching to the boys that it’s time to up the intensity and sense of urgency with the playoffs coming, and why not start this off like a playoff game type of atmosphere,” Willis said. “Offensively I thought we executed as well as we had all year. We had very few mistakes. We had a fumble real late under center but other than it was real clean offensively. I think there was one holding penalty in the first half so other than that things were sharp on offense. We had one misthrown ball but percentage wise it was about the best we’ve played all year on offense.
“The defense obviously got the shutout and those guys play well and hard over there all the time.
“We had too many penalties still but there’s something about Vian and Keys when they play. It gets a little rowdy. It was a both-ways type of deal and kids will be kids, that type of thing. Some of our guys had had issues with that earlier and they handled themselves really well and I was proud of that. Other than cleaning up penalties it was a good night.”
Vann was the game’s leading rusher with 238 yards on 12 carries and also in double figures for Vian were Creager (9 carries for 86 yards), Gray Cloud (5 for 61), Javyn Wright (2 for 54), Dil’n Murchison (5 for 22), Fletcher (1 for 14) and Craighead (3 for 10).
Javyn Wright completed 2 of 4 passes for 25 yards and quarterback River Simon was 1 of 1 for 18 yards. Elijah Wright (2 catches for 25 yards) and Vann (1 for 18) had the receptions.
Vian (8-2 overall) hosts Hugo (5-5) in a Class 2A first-round playoff game on Friday while Keys (3-7) did not qualify for the postseason.
