Majority of school staff rehired; Agreements approved on new high school

Following a meeting of the Vian Board of Education on April 11, Vian School Superintendent Victor Salcedo said the majority of teachers, staff personnel and administration currently employed at the school district were rehired for the 2022-2023 school year.

Following a meeting of the Vian Board of Education on April 11, Vian School Superintendent Victor Salcedo said the majority of teachers, staff personnel and administration currently employed at the school district were rehired for the 2022-2023 school year.

The board went into an executive session for over two hours to discuss the employment, rehiring or tabling of school staff and employees, both certified and non-certified, and upon reconvening voted to hire all current staff back with the exception of one teacher and three resignations.

Part-time Wood Shop instructor Tommy Wright‚s employment was reportedly tabled following a motion from board member James Thornton, which was seconded by Ken Pack, and resignations were accepted from Larry Jamison, high school math teacher; Amanda Johnson, Pre-K teacher; and Sevilla Mosely, Kindergarten teacher‚s aid.

The board also voted to hire an additional Ag teacher for the 2022-2023 school year.

Regarding the new high school building, the board voted to approve agreements with Smith Roberts Baldishchwiler, LLC Civil Engineering Services for the project and Burgess Engineering and Testing Subsurface Exploration for the foundation and pavement.

The donation agreement for the new high school between the school district and Dr. Sinclair Armstrong was also approved, along with the release of options rights for the property W/2 W/2 NW/4 of Section 27, Township 12N, Range 22E.

The board unanimously voted to approve a Resolution approving and affirming a lease/purchase agreement and authorizing the execution of the same; designating lease transaction as a qualified tax-exempt obligation; authorizing employment of School District Counsel, financial advisor and Bond Counsel pertaining to financing; and authorizing School District officials to execute any and all necessary documents in connection with the aforementioned transactions.

Approved were 307 Supplemental Appropriations of $750,000 for the 2021- 2022 school year and Temporary Appropriations for FY 2022-2023.

Annual agreements were approved with the following for the 2022-2023 school year: Rosenstein, Fist & Ringold Attorney at Law; TCA/Federal Programs service; Ruth Kelley Studios; Josten‚s; Interquest Detection Canines; and Approve Days to Hours Calendar.

Policies were approved concerning Emergency Preparedness, Service of Legal Papers, Criminal Records Search, Compliance with State and Federal Law Regarding Employee Leave and Payroll, RSA, Advertising in District Media, Service Animals, Student Records, Use of School Facilities, Alcohol and Drug Testing for Bus Drivers, Compliance-FMCA Clearinghouse, Title IX Policy and Administration of Medicine.

Other items given the green light were the approval of the revised School Calendar for 2021-2022; a one-time $500 stipend for school employees; and contract for the audit of Vian Public Schools 2021-2022 financial statements with Kerry John Patton,

The board also heard from Brandon Frazier and Lyndsey Sullivan, regarding a volleyball program for the school, and during the Superintendent‚s Report, Salcedo recognized the Girls Wrestling Team, FCCLA and Esports Team.
