Yet another pitcher from the University of Oklahoma has gotten the call from the big leagues.
Vian‚s Javier Ramos, a 6‚6” 206-lb. right hander, has been selected in the MLB Draft in the 18th round by the Colorado Rockies. He was the 536th pick of the three-day draft. Ramos, a redshirt sophomore for OU by way of Seminole State College, possessed one of the most electric arms on the Sooners roster a year ago. But command issues made his role out of the bullpen sometimes hard to lock down.
But with 24 strikeouts in less than 23 innings, his ability to get swings and misses was obvious. It‚s expected that his place in the Sooners‚ pitching hierarchy is likely poised to climb with more time in the OU system should be choose to return to Norman for his junior season.
Ramos appeared in 15 games for the Sooners this season, and started one game. He posted a 1-1 record with a 5.16 ERA. In his start on March 16 against Air Force, he pitched three shutout innings. Then on March 29 against Oklahoma State, he struck out four and allowed a single run in 2.2 innings of relief.
In OU‚s march to the World Series Finals, Ramos got some work in the NCAA Super Regional at Virginia Tech when he struck out three Hokies in 1.2 innings.
Should Ramos sign with the Rockies, he will finish his Sooner career having appeared in 30 games, including six starts. He rang up 43 strikeouts in just over 40 innings on the mound.
In the MLB Draft‚s 20 rounds of selections, 11 OU players — the most of any school in the nation — came off the board as the pinnacle of the Sooners‚ historic run to the CWS championship series in Omaha.
Ramos was the fifth Sooner taken on the final day of the draft, and the sixth pitcher from the OU bullpen. As part of OU‚s record-setting draft experience, Ramos helped cement OU‚s status as a pipeline to the big leagues.
While having your name called by an MLB club is a dream for baseball players, some will certainly have a decision to make as to whether or not they want to continue their collegiate career for another season, or sign with the team that selected them.
