Sallisaw: Founders and Football is Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library local History Project

By News Staff

Sallisaw: Founders and Football is Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library local History Project News Staff Wed, 07/27/2022 - 06:50

One traditional role of the local public library is the preservation of community history. The Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library has chosen for 2022 local history topic, Sallisaw: Founders and Football. Questions that they would like to answer include: when was the first Sallisaw football game; does someone have photos from the 1930‚s, 1940‚s, 1950‚s, 1960‚s, 1970‚s, and the State champions of the 1980‚s; and are there stories that should be preserved and shared with future generations?

The library will be seeking to interview former coaches and players or their families who have stories to tell. Some of those edited interviews will be included in a YouTube video whose working title is “Sallisaw Football Heritage.” All interviews will be preserved in the library. A video premiere and reception will be held during Homecoming Week in the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library.

The library is also seeking photos for a photo display. Individuals are asked to bring the photos to the library where the photos will be scanned and the owners will be asked to complete a scrapbook memory form. The photo owners will be able to take their photos home immediately. Library staff members will curate a display of the printed copies of the photo with the memories. The display would be available for public viewing the week before and after homecoming which is September 23.

If you are interested in participating in this local history collection, please call the library at 918-775-4481. There will be a planning meeting on Thursday, July 28 at 6:00pm in the library meeting room. All are invited.

The Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library, a branch of the Eastern Oklahoma Library System, is located at 101 East Cherokee.

For more information, contact Bethia Owens, Branch Librarian, at 918-775-4481.
