Production of uranium into nuclear reactor fuel at the Gore facility was stopped in 1992, but cleanup and litigation issues continue. Sequoyah Fuels owns about 9,000 acres at the site, of which about 600 acres is considered the production plant area.

John Ellis, president at the Gore site, said the fertilizer program was implemented in 1973 after a series of tests and demonstration studies on a small plot of land indicated it would be safe. And when annual monitoring continued to reaffirm that finding, additional areas were added until several thousand acres were included.

The program has been watched and managed by several entities over the years.

NRC officials said they had no regulatory concerns for any use or disposition of the Sequoyah Fuels‚ land under discussion, except for a small portion where an accidental release occurred in 1986.
