Practice Underway for Local Teams

Practice Underway for Local Teams News Staff Wed, 08/10/2022 - 08:28

High school football practice for teams across the state got underway Monday.

Limited practices are allowed through Thursday and on Friday teams will begin full practices.

MULDROW Brandon Ellis is in his second season as the head coach of the Bulldogs and Muldrow was 4-6 overall in 2021, its best record since 2017 (7-4).

The Bulldogs, who were in District 4A-4 the past two seasons, are now members of District 3A-3.

Muldrow is scheduled to host Panama in a scrimmage on Aug. 19 and the Bulldogs take on Roland at home at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 in their season opener.

ROLAND Former Roland offensive coordinator Austin Cantrell is the new head coach of the Rangers, who were 7-3 last season under head coach Mark Rutlege. Rutlege entered the private sector earlier this year.

The Rangers remain in District 2A-5 this season.

Roland will scrimmage at Sequoyah-Tahlequah on Aug. 19 and travel to Muldrow on Aug. 25 for its season opener.

VIAN Gary Willis begins his seventh season as the head coach of the Wolverines. Vian, which won the District 2A-5 title while reaching the second round of the Class 2A playoffs in 2021, was 10-2 last season.

The Wolverines, who will remain in District 2A-5 for the next two seasons, are scheduled to scrimmage at Sequoyah-Tahlequah on Aug. 18 before starting their season at home on Aug. 26 against Washington, the Class 2A state runner-up in 2021.

Willis‚ overall record at Vian is 62-14.

GORE Brandon Tyler starts his sixth season at his alma mater in 2022. The Pirates, who won the District A-8 championship while advancing to the second round of the Class A playoffs in 2021, was 11-1 last season.

The Pirates will stay in District A-8 for the next two seasons and are slated to scrimmage at Heavener on Aug. 19 before traveling to Wilburton on Aug. 26 for their season opener.

Tyler‚s overall record at Gore is 46-10.

SALLISAW The Black Diamonds of new head coach Mark Hutson look to improve on last season‚s 1-9 record in 2022.

Sallisaw will remain in District 4A-4 for the next two seasons and the Black Diamonds are scheduled to scrimmage Grove at home on Aug. 19 before opening their regular season at Stigler on Aug. 26.

CENTRAL The Tigers and head coach Jeremy Thompson are optimistic about bettering last season‚s 3-7 record.

Central will stay in District A-8 for the next two seasons and the Tigers will scrimmage at Keys on Aug. 18 and at Morris on Aug. 26 before hosting Heavener Sept. 2 in their season opener.

Thompson is beginning his 10th season as the head coach of the Tigers.

GANS The Grizzlies were 2-7 in 2021 and head coach Brian Morton is looking for improvement in his second season at Gans.

Gans, an eight-man team, will remain in District B-6 for the next two seasons. The Grizzlies are scheduled to scrimmage at Maud on Aug. 19 before hosting Oaks on Aug. 26 in their season opener.

WEBBERS FALLS The Warriors of head coach Trent Holt were 6-4 in 2022 but narrowly missed qualifying for the playoffs.

Webbers Falls, an eight-man team competing in District B-5, will scrimmage at South Coffeyville on Aug. 19 before traveling to Regent Prep in Tulsa for its season opener on Aug. 26.

Holt is beginning his eighth season as the head coach of the Warriors.
