NORMAN —The Oklahoma football team, preparing for its first season under head coach Brent Venables, will begin the season ranked ninth in the preseason USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, which was released Monday.

This marks the 20th time in the last 22 seasons, and the seventh straight year, that OU has been ranked ninth or higher in the annual preseason coaches poll.

The Sooners are one of four Big 12 squads in this year‚s preseason coaches poll and the highest ranked of the group. Baylor is one spot behind at No. 10 and Oklahoma State follows at No. 11 while Texas is ranked No. 18. Kansas State and Iowa State are among teams receiving votes.

The rest of the top 10 consists of No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 8 Utah.

Oklahoma was picked second in the Big 12 Conference preseason poll by the media. R e d s h i r t f i f th- year punter Michael Turk (first team) and redshirt junior quarterback Dillon Gabriel (preseason newcomer of the year) earned preseason All-Big 12 honors.
