Webbers Falls falls in season opener, prepares for Wesleyan

TULSA – Winning in prep football is a process.

For Webbers Falls, that process included a 53-6 humbling Friday night at the hands of top-ranked Regent Prep.

But the Warriors had a few bright spots. Coach Trent Holt‚s charges moved the ball on offense, but they couldn‚t sustain enough momentum for a win in the season opener.

“Offensively we moved the ball pretty well,” Holt said. “We went up and down the field, we just didn‚t score. We fumbled the ball twice, we threw an interception that they scored on and they did an onside kick that they got and they eventually scored on it.”

“We had basically four turnovers.” It‚s well known that butterflies sometimes blossom at season openers, and they tend to get blamed for mental mistakes, like drive-ending fouls, missed assignments and a few bad snaps.

“We had a couple of key holding calls,” Holt noted.

“We‚d get on the 5 or 10 yard line one of the many times we were down inside the 20, then we‚d snap it over the quarterback‚s head back to around the 40.”

The defense wanted to show that the offense weren‚t the only ones that had a bad night.

“Now, defensively, we didn‚t play well at all, but offensively we moved the ball around well” “We didn‚t throw the ball well,” Holt said. “We were like 1 for 17, and after watching the film, we shoulda been more like 6 or 7 for 17.”

“They‚re a good football team, there‚s no question about that,” Holt said of Regent Prep.

Looking ahead to Friday‚s game versus Wesleyan Christian, the opportunities to improve were many, and Holt pointed out areas that he wants the offense to focus on.

“The offensive line played decent, but we can get a lot better,” he said. “We just gotta work on our steps. They just weren‚t right, our footwork was bad. Steppin‚ in the right spots, and then we were missing a couple of assignments of who we were supposed to be blockin‚.”

“We played decent, we just could be a lot better if we would step in the right direction. We‚ll teach ’em, ’cause the effort was pretty good.

“We never quit,” Holt said. “We fought till the end. We did some good stuff, we even had some good plays defensively, we just didn‚t have enough of them.”

“They threw the ball so much, we just still cannot get ourselves to play man [defense correctly].

“Our defensive backs have the mindsets that they want to come up and make tackles, like everybody does, they won‚t read the receivers,” Holt noted. “Then they‚re always looking in the backfield, they get in that position and then they‚re gonna get burned, and that is what happened.”

“The key right there is we gotta be disciplined. Ours is horrible, and it‚s gotta get better.”

A year ago against Wesleyan Christian, the Warriors beat the Mustangs, 40-27.
