Students from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) have earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These programs grant academic honors to underrepresented minorities who can include them on college and scholarship applications. Through the College Board‚s Student Search Service, colleges and scholarship programs identify students who were awarded National African American, Hispanic, Indigenous and/or Rural/Small Town Recognition.
The OSSM students who earned these accolades are Julie Macedo of Durant, National Indigenous Award; Maddox Mayo of Sallisaw, National Indigenous Award; Tessa Hart of Choctaw, National Hispanic Recognition Award; and Xavier Navarro from Edmond, National Hispanic Recognition Award.
“We are pleased that our students have earned this recognition. We are immensely proud of them for their achievements in their classrooms and on College Board assessments,” said Edna McDuffie Manning, Ed.D., interim president of OSSM. “ These programs help students from underrepresented backgrounds stand out to colleges during the admissions process.” Eligible students for these awards have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams. Additional qualifications include an African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, or Indigenous ethnicity, and/or attend school in a rural area.
Nationally ranked in the top one percent of public high schools in the United States, OSSM provides a college-level, academically advanced curriculum in science and mathematics to juniors and seniors. Created through legislative action in 1983, the two-year residential, college-level education is available to all high school students in Oklahoma since tuition, room and board are provided by the state.
