After Porum loss, Gans to work on fundamentals before district starts
PORUM – Gans will have a week to work on lessons learned so far this season after Friday‚s 52-6 loss at Porum.
Gans head coach Brian Morton is continuing to work with his young squad on fundamentals and how to incorporate those skills into moving the football effectively, as well as tackling and blocking, depending on the current situation on the field.

“Honestly, I felt like we matched up good,” Morton said. “Our [kids‚] minds just weren‚t in it. We broke down a lot on defense. I feel like offensively, our line coulda done much better.”
Gans was able to move the ball early against Porum, but things quickly got out of hand.
“Our first series, we hit Caleb Martin with about a 60-yard pass. He got it down inside the 5.”
From there, the Grizzlies let Clay Martinez punch it up the middle to get into the endzone. That ended up being Gans‚ only scoring drive of the game.
“One thing we were focused on this game was trying to spread the field,” Morton said. “Going to a one-back [offense] and having Clay [Martinez where] we tested him a little bit and had him just run the ball straight up the middle. I felt like he did a good job for us there. They just put too much pressure on our quarterback, and it really limited what we were able to do offensively.”
The Grizzlies are going to focus on themselves during their week off before turning the page to begin preparing for Welch, which is an away game and the Grizzlies‚ first district game.
“Right now, we know where our weak points are, we‚ve just got to hide ’em a little better. We gotta focus on our strong points and get ready for district, which is in two weeks.
“We‚re looking to tweak our defense quite a bit. We really like the three-man front, but we‚ve had to get out of it and go to a four-man front, which has left us real weak on that middle backer. We‚re looking to change a few things around to try to protect that middle backer a little more so he can make a few more plays. We‚ve been on the drawing board; we‚re doing what we can.”
With two weeks until the Welch game, Morton is staying positive and hopes that some of the more experienced Grizzlies players will get their medical releases in time for district play to start.
“I‚m pretty positive about our boys. I mean, we‚re going to show up one game and everything‚s going to go right for us and it‚s going to be a completely different team when this happens,” Morton said. “Every game, something happens where it‚s like, this is positive, and this is what your guys are capable of, but we‚re just not doing it consistently right now.
