Webbers Falls can do no wrong against Cave Springs

By Jim Cameron Sports Writer

BUNCH – Webbers Falls won 49-0 at Cave Springs Thursday night in the Warriors‚ last nondistrict game of the season. Warriors head coach Trent Holt believes his charges are playing well as they go into this off week before starting Class B District-5 play hosting Dewar on Oct. 7. “Just about anything we tried, worked,” Holt said. “We blocked pretty well. We‚re still having a little bit of an issue not blocking the right guy. Our starting tight end wasn‚t there, and we had a backup in there, and he was blocking the wrong right guy a couple of times. We missed a few blocks, but overall I thought we played pretty well.”

Webbers Falls is working on its passing game to develop a more balanced offense to give defenses more to deal with from the run-heavy Warriors.

“We threw the ball well. We had like six passes that we shoulda caught, we dropped six passes. [Maddux Shelby] threw the ball well, we just dropped ’em. Sometimes he throws ’em pretty hard. You‚ve gotta be really concentrating, so it might just be a lack of concentration.”

The Warriors offense had another big night, with Shelby going 6 for 13 for 113 yards and two touchdowns, along with seven carries for 149 yards and four touchdowns. Blaize Harriman snagged three passes for 81 yards and a touchdown, as well as three carries for 24 yards and a touchdown. Dallas Nation had two receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown, Isaiah Terrell had five carries for two yards, and Zane Nolan had five carries for 37 yards and a pass reception for two yards.

Defensively, Webbers Falls had its first shutout of the season. Nolan was the leading tackler with six stops and three sacks, Shelby had three tackles and one assist, Ben Ward registered two stops with one for a loss, and Justin Cole had one tackle, three assists and one sack.

Holt knows developing the Warriors‚ skills players won‚t be easy, which is why fans and coaches admire the ones that can consistently just reach out and latch onto the football when it comes by.

“We‚re off this week. District play is next, and we‚re playing Dewar, which is the No. 1 team in the district. At least we‚re going to have a few extra days to practice,” Holt said. “This week we‚re going to focus on technique and fundamentals, and we‚re going to put a few things in. We‚ll be heavy on fundamentals this week, but next week, we‚ll change gears to game planning type stuff.

“We know what we‚re going to try to do. This week we‚re going to get better at trying to do it.”
