Vian visits Henryetta Thursday night in a District 2A-5 game as the Class 2A No. 5 Wolverines seek to register their fourth straight win of the season.
The Wolverines (4-2 overall and 3-0 in the district) beat Okemah (2-4 and 1-2) 5514 last week at home and Henryetta 2-4 and 1-2) lost 3330 to Warner.
Henryetta opened its season with 42-6 and 18-15 losses to Victory Christian and Morris, respectively, before beating Hartshorne 46-28. In district play the Knights also lost 5612 to unbeaten Prague and downed Sequoyah-Tahlequah 42-28.
“They‚re doing a pretty good job of running it and throwing it,” Vian head coach Gary Willis said. “They came back on Warner and almost beat Warner the other night and they look to be pretty improved.
“They‚ve got a quarterback that can throw it and a decent running back and play with a lot more intensity on defense. We need to get ready to play. I think we‚ll be fine but at the same time it will be more competition.”
Last season the Wolverines shut out the Knights 54-0.
A few of Henryetta‚s key players on offense are linemen Ethan Green (6-foot, 210-pound senior), Isaac McNac (5-7, 280, sr.) and Tyler Hamric (5-11, 180, soph.), tight end Camern Berryhill (6-1, 180, sr.), quarterback Brady Norman (6-0, 170, soph.) and running back David Reid (5-8, 150, jr.).
“They‚re a spread team on offense and they‚re pretty balanced,” Willis said. They‚re probably 60/40 run heavy but they‚re throwing it quite a bit.
“To be balanced is a key for our defense because they will do both (run and pass) but we always start with the run game and try to shut down the run and contain the pass.”
Some of the Knights‚ key players on defense are defensive lineman Ethan Green, linebackers Seth Kinslow (61, 180, jr.) and James Miller and defensive backs Reid and Brayden Chacon (5-9, 150, jr.).
“They are a 3-3 stack on defense,” said Willis. “Getting the ball on the edge of that stack or getting in formations to make them break that stack and get one of those lineman out of the box is a key for our offense. I think the plan will be to get Desean (Mays) on the edge with his speed and they‚ll get a guy out of there and then Masyn (Wright) will run inside probably.”
