Webbers Falls heads to Caddo today for a District B-5 game between the pass-happy Bruins and the run-focused Warriors with kickoff scheduled at 7 p.m.
Warriors head coach Trent Holt is preparing his charges for an aerial assault from the Bruins, working on pass protection and learning strategies to hurry the quarterback this week.
“It‚s going to be a ballgame,” Holt stated. “We‚re going to have to play well to win, I know that.
“They‚re a pretty good football team. They throw the ball really well. The quarterback throws it well, and they‚ve got two or three receivers that can catch it.”
Bruins quarterback Coltin Speers isn‚t a one-trick pony. Speers has an impressive completion percentage of 67% so far this season, and he‚s the second most productive rusher on the team, averaging just over 43 yards per game, behind Brody Braziell, who‚s averaging almost 71 yards a game.
The Bruins‚ defense is led by Jaren Percell, who‚s averaging 12 tackles per game, followed closely by Jordan Vaugh‚s 11 tackles and Konnor Williams‚ 5.5 tackles a game.
“They run it some and they‚re pretty effective at it, but typically they‚re going to throw it six to seven times out of 10,” Holt revealed. “We hope we‚re practiced up enough at linebacker. We‚re going to put in some different stunts on the QB, ’cause when he doesn‚t throw it, he‚s a really good runner. He‚s pretty shifty, and he can scramble well.”
The Warriors‚ offense will probably be without playmaker Maddux Shelby again this week due to injury, but backup quarterback Blaize Herriman led the team to a 52-6 win over Porum last Thursday at homecoming, so the team looks to be adjusting well to Herriman calling the plays.
The Webbers Falls offense should be able to move the ball against the Caddo defense, due to power running backs and the offensive line blocking better each week.
“Now, defensively, I think we can move the ball and score, and I think that by watching film, that we‚re more physical than they are. But we‚ll see how that goes,” Holt said.
“We had a good practice, and the defense practiced yesterday, but I don‚t always know how that will translate to game night. We‚ve had some great weeks of practice and then not played well, but then our practices were horrible and the next week we‚d play pretty well, so you just never know which group is going to show up sometimes.”
This looks to be another important game that plays a big part in determining the post-season and who the Warriors will play, as well as where they get to go or if they could host a playoff game if they win their last two regular-season games.
“Caddo is athletic, and they do stuff right,” Holt said. ”But if we play well, then it‚s a ballgame.”
