By Lea Lessley Sports Writer

The Class 2A No. 4 Wolverines outscored Sequoyah 46-6 in the first half of Thursday’s District 2A-5 contest in Tahlequah on their way to registering a 53-33 win over the Indians in Vian’s final game of the regular season.

VIAN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

The Class 2A No. 4 Wolverines outscored Sequoyah 46-6 in the first half of Thursday’s District 2A-5 contest in Tahlequah on their way to registering a 53-33 win over the Indians in Vian’s final game of the regular season.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday night but the contest was moved because of the threat of inclement weather.

Vian (8-2 for the season) will host Spiro in a Class 2A first-round playoff game Friday night and Sequoyah (1-9) did not qualify for the postseason.

“We came out and got up early and we got our guys out to keep them healthy,” Vian head coach Gary Willis said. “Sequoyah scored quite a bit in the second half but that was on our backups. It was a pretty good game for our starters.”

The Wolverines scored three touchdowns in the first five minutes of the opening period. Desean Mays ran for a 25-yard touchdown with 9:38 remaining and 36 seconds later Vian defender Michael Polecat returned an interception 40 yards for a TD before Cash Collins’ successful point-after kick gave Vian a 13-0 advantage. Quarterback Diego Ramos completed a 24-yard touchdown throw to Mays at the 6:59 mark to widen the lead to 19.

Sequoyah quarterback Jalen Handle tossed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Eli Hammer with 6:23 left to make the score 19-6.

Polecat registered his second touchdown of the period on a 61-yard reception from Ramos less than a minute later and Masyn Wright’s 90-yard touchdown scamper ended the firstquarter scoring with the Wolverines on top 32-6.

Vian led 46-6 at the intermission after recording two touchdowns passes in the second stanza. Mays and Ramos teamed up for a 30-yard touchdown at the 4:45 mark and a 75-yard completion from Ramos to Mays resulted in another TD with 23 seconds to go before the half. Collins made both of his extra-point kicks in the quarter.

Handle completed a 30-yard TD pass to Brody Young early in the third period before Mays’ 75-yard touchdown run and Collins’ PAT gave Vian a 53-12 lead.

Hammer caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Handle before Todd Davis kicked the extra point later in the third.

In the final 12 minutes Hammer ran for a 24-yard touchdown and Aidan Armontrout rushed for a 5-yard TD. Landon Girty added the point-after kicks following Sequoyah’s final two scores.

Polecat (40 yards and a touchdown), Mays (0) and Trace Sanders (24) each intercepted a pass for the Wolverines in the game.

Ramos completed 7-of-14 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns and Nathan Creasey was 1-of-3 for six yards. Mays caught three throws for 129 yards and three TDs, Polecat’s three receptions netted 80 yards and a TD and Sanders had three catches for six yards.

Vian’s rushers were Wright (7 carries for 116 yards and a TD), Mays (3 for 102 and a TD), Tristan Wiley (13 for 47), Ramos (1 for 16), Kaden Fulbright (3 for 9), Sanders (1 for 4) and Creasey (3 for minus 5).

Handle returned an interception 20 yards for the Indians in the contest.

Handle completed 19-of-31 throws for 268 yards and three TDs and Young was 3-of-9 for 22 yards. Sequoyah’s pass catchers were Hammer (10 receptions for 132 yards and 2 TDs), Handle (1 for 84 and a TD), Armontrout (2 for 29), Ethan Winn (3 for 26) and Lawson Morgan (1 for 17).

Sequoyah’s rushers were Eric Walters (9 rushes for 45 yards), Hammer (4 for 34 and a TD), Armontrout (13 for 33 and a TD) and Young (4 for minus 8).

Vian recorded 521 yards (225 yards passing and 178 rushing) of total offense and Sequoyah registered 360 (290 and 70).
