The Webbers Falls Warriors head into the postseason Friday traveling to Keota for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The battle-damaged Webbers Falls squad take on the Lions in an effort to bring home the first postseason win of the year against another tough opponent.
But this wasn’t the way Webbers Falls head coach Trent Holt wanted the postseason to start. Holt was hopeful his injured starting quarterback and playmaker Shelby Maddux was going to be released and healthy in time for the playoffs, but that’s not in the cards, as it seems he’ll be out for the rest of the season. Nevertheless, the Warriors have a mission.
“We’ve got a shot,” Holt confirmed. “They’re pretty good, but we match up well, ‘cause they don’t throw it particularly well, so we should have a chance to win this one. We just have to play well and do what we’re supposed to do.”
The Warriors are coming off a 46-0 loss last week to Quinton, dropping their District B-5 record to 2-4 and their overall record to 6-5.
The Keota Lions are undefeated in District B-6 play this season, and have a talented squad that is coming off a 6618 win over Gans on Monday in a stormrescheduled game.
The Warriors’ defense needs to stop Keota’s run game early and make the Lions pass the ball to win, which would create a momentum change in Webbers Falls’ favor. Stopping the big plays and containing the pass are key to winning in the Warriors’ first postseason challenge.
Blaize Herriman is stepping into Shelby’s shoes as the Warriors’ field general, where he has had mixed success since having to fill the role.
The Warriors’ offense needs to establish the run early, making key blocks and getting outside to open up lanes for the running backs, which should open up their passing game. Turnovers and big plays are going to be key to winning, so protecting the ball is paramount.
