Members learn how TOPS began

By Billie Anthony

Monday we had six ladies weigh in. We had a net loss this week of 4 pounds. We had a short meeting today because of the wintry weather that was going to move into the area. Our best weight loss was by Donna of 2.7 pounds. Weigh to go, Donna! Keep up the good work.

Sallisaw TOPS

Monday we had six ladies weigh in. We had a net loss this week of 4 pounds. We had a short meeting today because of the wintry weather that was going to move into the area. Our best weight loss was by Donna of 2.7 pounds. Weigh to go, Donna! Keep up the good work.

Virginia’s name was drawn for the Two Bit Bowl of quarters, but the quarters went to the treasury!

We finished off the Losers Lotto boxes today, next week we will draw out a lucky ladies name. Losers Lotto is a popular contest so we will start it again next week.

Our chapter challenge this week will be to pick out our favorite Thanksgiving side dish and slenderize it(cut out calories) and bring the recipe to TOPS next week and share with the group.

Our program Monday was from our TOPS magazine and the article written by President Rick. The article name, “Looking to the Past to Secure Our Future.” The story states that TOPS was modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Frederick Stare from Harvard’s nutrition department is quoted as saying, “group therapy was the best way for fat people to get thin.” Founder, Mrs. Esther Manz, wanted a close connection to the medical community to enable our organization to stay current on the science and make sure that TOPS follows the best available advice to help our members. These two concepts—support and sound medical information—are always at the forefront in any decision on how TOPS CLUB INC. evolves. This a long way of saying, sometimes it is necessary to look to the past to secure the future. TOPS will always provide confidential weigh-ins and will continue to promote them. Your weight is just a number and does not define you. Your health is what is important. Emphasizing non-scale victories and reducing barriers that prevent members from attending meetings definitely fits in with Mrs. Manz’s philosophy. Support is more important that mandatory weigh-ins. Chapters may still hold local contests that require a weekly weigh-in, however, members can choose to participate or not. As TOPS celebrates its 75th year in 2023, we will continue to follow what Mrs. Manz started…a supportive group tied to the medical community to do what is best for its members as they strive for a healthier lifestyle. Pres. Rick Danforth The price to join TOPS CLUB INC is $49 for a new member and for a member whose membership has expired the cost is $37. If you want to visit us to see what happens at a TOPS meeting, your first visit is free.

EVERYONE is invited to visit. The first visit is FREE. It cost $49 a year to join TOPS Club INC. We meet at First Christian Church, 706 N Wheeler, Sallisaw, Monday at 10am-12pm. We begin weighing at 10am and the meeting starts at 11am and ends at 12. For more info, please call Billie at 918/413-1383. We look forward to meeting you.
