Sallisaw woman alleged to have taken over $4,400 from employer
An arrest warrant has been issued for a Sallisaw woman accused of embezzling over $4,400 from her employer.
Loretta “Retta” McCauley, 54, was charged Dec. 8 in Sequoyah County District Court and the warrant was issued for her arrest the same day, according to court records.
Sequoyah County Sheriff’s investigator Brian Rutherford reported on Dec. 6, 2021, he was dispatched to Gans Git and Go in reference to an embezzlement report. The reporting party alleged around July 19, 2021, he began noticing paperwork was not matching with the credit card receipts, and calculated the amount he believed to be missing. The reporting party said the amount was around $4,200, according to the probable cause affidavit, and he believed Mc-Cauley was allegedly taking the money.
The reporting party said he questioned McCauley about the missing money and recorded the conversation between them. He said McCauley allegedly confessed to stealing the missing money more than once but was unsure of the exact amount.
The reporting party said he told McCauley he’d work with her on paying the money back but she eventually stopped responding to his text messages, according to the affidavit. He told authorities McCauley had still not attempted to pay the business back and was refusing calls or text messages from him. The reporting party determined the amount missing to be $4,446.76.
Rutherford reported making numerous attempts to contact McCauley but was unsuccessful in doing so. The investigator said he then forwarded the information to the District Attorney’s office for prosecution.
District Attorney Jack Thorp said if found guilty of the charge, McCauley could face imprisonment in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections not exceeding five years or by a fine not exceeding $5,000, or both fine and imprisonment.
