Pirates beat Porum in home opener Saturday

The Gore boys defeated Porum Saturday in their home opener inside the Gore Event Center after the Lady Pirates lost to the Lady Panthers in their contest.

The Gore boys defeated Porum Saturday in their home opener inside the Gore Event Center after the Lady Pirates lost to the Lady Panthers in their contest.

In their season openers Thursday night at Hulbert the Gore girls fell to the Lady Riders before the Pirates downed the Riders.

PORUM GIRLS 67, GORE 42

The Lady Pirates stayed close for three periods Saturday in Gore but the Lady Panthers pulled away in the final frame to register the Riverside Athletic Association win.

Gore’s Oaklei Thornton made a pair of 2-point field goals in the first quarter but Porum grabbed a 17-10 advantage.

In the second stanza Lindsey Pierce (9 points) connected on three 2-point baskets and went 3-for-3 at the foul line for the Lady Pirates, who trailed 29-23 at the break after being outscored 13-12.

Natalie Casteel knocked down a 3-pointer and scored six of Gore’s 12 points in the third quarter but the Lady Panthers took a 43-35 lead to the final frame after adding two points (14-12) to their lead.

Porum outscored Gore 22-7 in the final eight minutes.

Pierce scored a team-high 15 points in the contest and also registering points for Gore were Casteel (10), Thornton (4), Emily Daily (3) and Kima Wells, Aspyn Cearley, Andi Summerlin, Kennedy Williams and Rayleigh Moore (2 each).

Porum’s top four scorers were Rilee Miller (17 points), Courtney Pease (14) and Adysen Dishman and Leia Johnson (10 each).

GORE BOYS 60, PORUM 27

The Pirates outscored the visiting Panthers 21-2 in the first stanza on their way to the convincing conference win over Porum Saturday.

In the opening period Gore’s Noah Cooper (12 points) knocked down three 3-pointers and Journey Shells and Jackson Duke scored four and three points, respectively, for the Pirates.

Ben Kirkpatrick hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter to help the Pirates add five points (94) to their advantage and lead 30-6 at the intermission.

Aidan Dickerson, Kirkpatrick and Shells (4 points apiece) and Keigan Reid (3-pointer) and Duke (3 points) accounted for all of Gore’s points in the third stanza. Three of Kirkpatrick’s points came on his third trey of the game.

Cain Cooper (5 points) and Bryon McDuffie each made a 3-pointer for the Pirates in the final eight minutes.

Kirkpatrick and Noah Cooper tied for game-high scoring honors with 12 points apiece and also scoring for Gore were Shells (8), Duke (7), Dickerson (6), Cain Cooper (5), Reid and McDuffie (3 each) and Tate Brooksher and Burr Jaynes (2 apiece).

Isaiah Sallee led the Panthers in scoring with 11 points.

HULBERT GIRLS 54, GORE 45

The Lady Pirates trimmed 12 points off a 21-point halftime deficit Thursday night at Hulbert in their season opener.

In the first period Gore’s Lindsey Pierce and Kima Wells registered four points apiece but the Lady Riders took a 22-9 advantage.

Hulbert led 39-18 at the intermission after outscoring the Lady Pirates 17-9 in the second quarter.

Pierce (5 points) hit a 3-pointer in the third stanza and Oaklei Thornton and Aspyn Cearley recorded four and three points, respectively, for the Lady Pirates, who outscored Hulbert 16-7.

In the final frame Pierce knocked down her second 3-pointer and totaled four points and Rayleigh Moore made three foul shots as Gore sliced three points (11-8) off the deficit.

Pierce scored a team-high 13 points in the contest and also recording points for Gore were Wells (8), Thornton (7), Natalie Casteel and Moore (5 each), Cearley and Emily Daily (3 apiece) and Andi Summlerlin (1).

Scoring for Hulbert (4-4) were Sadie Chambers (19 points), Brea Lamb (11), Lily Brown (9), Gabby Cook (8), Calan Teague (6) and Dillin Stilwell (1).

GORE BOYS 45, HULBERT 28

The Pirates won their season opener in Cherokee County Thursday night by outscoring the Riders 37-18 in the final three periods.

Hulbert led 10-8 after the first eight minutes but the Pirates erased the deficit in the second stanza by outscoring the Riders 11-6. Ben Kirkpatrick and Jackson Duke recorded three points apiece for the Pirates, who led 19-16 at the break.

Aidan Dickerson made a pair of 2-point field goals and Kirkpatrick and Duke each knocked down a 3-pointer in the third frame to help Gore take a 33-24 advantage by increasing its lead by six (14-8).

Bryon McDuffie and Noah Cooper registered five and four points, respectively, for the Pirates in the fourth stanza as Gore widened its lead (12-4).

Kirkpatrick and Cooper (10 points apiece) and Duke (9) scored a combined 29 points and also scoring for the Pirates in the game were Dickerson and McDuffie (5 each), Keigan Reid (4) and Journey Shells (2).

Scoring for the Riders (2-5) were Tanner Vaughn (10 points), Adam Hickle (8), Kris Glenn (6), Nick Grim (2) and Cody Botts and Aidan Longan (1 each).
