Pirates top McCurtain in conference game Monday

The Class A No. 18 Pirates improved to 3-0 for the season Monday night inside the Gore Event Center with a win over McCurtain after the Lady Pirates fell to the Lady Bulldogs.

The Class A No. 18 Pirates improved to 3-0 for the season Monday night inside the Gore Event Center with a win over McCurtain after the Lady Pirates fell to the Lady Bulldogs.

MCCURTAIN GIRLS 45, GORE 41

The visiting Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Pirates 9-4 in the fourth period to edge the Lady Pirates in the conference game Monday night at Gore.

Early in the opening period Oaklei Thornton’s basket from the wing gave Gore a 2-0 lead. After McCurtain went in front 4-2 Lindsey Pierce made a pair of foul shots and Andi Summerlin went 4-for-4 at the line to help the Lady Pirates go in front 8-4. Thornton, Pierce and Summerlin recorded four points apiece in the quarter as Gore outscored the visitors 14-8.

Thornton added two more field goals in the second stanza but McCurtain trimmed five points (13-8) off the deficit.

Gore led 22-21 at the half. Both teams scored 15 points in the third period and Pierce hit a 3-pointer and totaled seven points for the Lady Pirates.

McCurtain scored the first seven points of the final frame to go in front for good.

Pierce scored a team-high 15 points in the game and Thornton followed with 11. Also registering points for Gore were Summerlin (8 points), Kima Wells (4), Natalie Casteel (2) and Rayleigh Moore (1).

McCurtain’s top two scorers were Kaylee Culwell (19 points) and Bailey Bennett (17).

GORE BOYS 49, MCCURTAIN 37

The Pirates outscored the Bulldogs 13-0 in the first eight minutes on their way to the conference victory Monday night.

Jackson Duke (8 points) and Journey Shells (4) led the way offensively for Gore in the opening period.

Duke, who scored a game-high 16 points in the contest, knocked down two 3-pointers in the second stanza and Noah Cooper and Tate Brooksher (3-pointer) added three points apiece for the Pirates, who led 31-9 at the half after outscoring the Bulldogs 18-9.

McCurtain scored the first nine points of the third frame before Ben Kirkpatrick’s inside basket with 3:44 left stopped the run. Shell’s 3-pointer and Kirkpatrick’s free throw ended the scoring in the period with the Pirates on top 37-18.

Cooper and Bryon McDuffie each made a 3-pointer for Gore in the fourth quarter but the Bulldogs trimmed seven points (19-12) off the final deficit.

Trailing Duke in scoring for Gore in the game were Shells (7 points), Cooper (6), Kirkpatrick (5), Kiegan Reid (4), Aidan Dickerson, McDuffie and Brooksher (3 each) and Cain Cooper (2).

McCurtain’s top three scorers were Clayne Honeycutt (11 points), Zane Cooper (8) and Ben Bond (7).
