Vian cagers fall to Oktaha in Big 8 play

Vian’s high school basketball teams dropped a pair of Big 8 Conference games to Oktaha Friday night inside Traw Fieldhouse.

Vian’s high school basketball teams dropped a pair of Big 8 Conference games to Oktaha Friday night inside Traw Fieldhouse.

OKTAHA GIRLS 81, VIAN 33

The Lady Wolverines trailed 15-12 a the end of the opening period but the Class 2A No. 10 Lady Tigers pulled away in the final three quarters to record the conference win Friday night at Vian.

Avery Wright (7 points) and Maci Smith (5 points) provided Vian’s scoring in the first period.

Smith, who knocked down three 3-pointers in the fourth stanza, scored a team-high 14 points in the contest and Wright followed with 12. Also scoring for the Lady Wolverines were Skyelar Locust, Kala Gibbins and Kiah Richardson (2 points apiece) and Rayleigh Terrill (1).

OKTAHA BOYS 51, VIAN 31

The Class 2A third-ranked Tigers led 17-11 at the half before widening their advantage in the second two periods Friday night at Vian.

Vian trailed 35-22 entering the final frame and Oktaha outscored the Wolverines 16-9 in the fourth.

K’den Richardson and Elijah Stewart led Vian in scoring with nine points apiece in the contest and also recording points for the Wolverines were Yonsi Grass (6), Desean Mays (4) and Diego Ramos (3).

VIAN GIRLS 37, HENRYETTA 20

The Lady Wolverines overcame a first-period deficit by outscoring host Henryetta 31-11 in the final three quarters last Tuesday night to even their record at 1-1.

In the first eight minutes Maci Smith, Skyelar Locust and Avery Wright each made a 2-point basket but the Lady Knights (0-2) took a 9-6 lead.

Smith hit a 3-pointer and totaled five points in the second stanza as the Lady Wolverines erased the deficit by shutting out the Lady Knights 7-0.

Vian led 13-9 at the half. Locust’s pair of field goals in the third period helped the Lady Wolverines add four points (7-3) to their advantage.

Behind the scoring of Smith and Wright (6 and 5 points, respectively) Vian outscored the Lady Knights 17-8 in the final frame.

Smith recorded a game-high 13 points in the contest and trailing her were Locust (10), Wright (7), Kala Gibbins (4), Rayleigh Terrill (2) and Kiah Richardson (1).

Vian’s leading rebounders in the game were Locust (15), Wright (7) and Smith (5). Locust had nine steals and trailing her in that department were Smith (8), Wright (5) and Gibbins (4).

In last week’s opener against Eufaula Locust registered 14 rebounds and four steals and Wright grabbed six rebounds while blocking three shots.

HENRYETTA BOYS 57, VIAN 54

Vian’s fourth-period comeback fell short last Tuesday night in Henryetta as the Knights hung on to down the Wolverines in the non-conference contest.

Each team scored 13 points in the opening quarter and K’den Richardson and Yonsi Grass scored six and five points, respectively, for the Wolverines (0-2).

Grass (4 points) and Elijah Stewart and Richardson (3 each) were Vian’s top scorers in the second stanza as Henryetta (4-1) outscored the visitors 18-12 to lead 3125 at the break.

Vian’s Diego Ramos made a pair of 3-pointers and totaled eight points and Grass recorded five of his teamhigh 19 points but the Knights added two points (1715) to their advantage in the third. Henryetta entered the final stanza leading 48-40.

The Wolverines sliced five points (14-9) off the deficit in the fourth period behind the scoring of Richardson and Grass (5 points and a 3-pointer apiece) and Stewart (4 points). Vian cut the lead to one (55-54) with 1:07 left in the fourth frame and with 10.5 seconds remaining a missed free throw (1-and-1) prevented the Wolverines from tying the score or taking the lead. The Knights made a pair of foul shots with 8.7 to go and Vian was unable to sink a shot in the final seconds of the contest.

Trailing Grass in scoring for Vian were Richardson (14 points), Ramos (12), Stewart (7) and Desean Mays (2).
