Gans gets mixed results against Cave Springs

GANS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Gans was hoping for better results hosting the Class A Cave Springs high school boys and girls teams last Thursday. The Lady Grizzlies won against the Lady Hornets but the Grizzlies were not so fortunate, losing to the Hornets.

GANS GIRLS 45, CAVE SPRINGS 35

Gans Lady Grizzlies’ head coach Laney James was please with the way her charges played on offense, with three players posting double digits: Brianna Burris (14 points), Emily Phillips (11) and Melania Paniagua (10).

The Lady Hornets matched Gans’ girls point-for-point in the first stanza ending at 8-8 with Burris making four of those points.

In the second period Burris and Layla Manuel made four-points apiece for Gans, helping them to open up a five-point lead (20-15) over the Lady Hornets at the halfway point.

Gans would have some trouble with adjustments in the third stanza and Cave Springs made 13 points and held Gans to 10 while diminishing the Lady Grizzlies’ lead to two.

The Cave Springs’ squad wasn’t able to stop Emily Phillips from making five points in the final quarter and Burris added another four points to help Gans put 15 points on the board. The Lady Hornets could only muster seven points, giving Gans a 10-point advantage at the buzzer.

The Lady Grizzlies improved to 3-5 this season and are off until the Sequoyah County Tournament, which begins Jan. 2.

Gans 8 12 10 15 –45 Cave Springs 8 7 13 7 –35 GANS–Burris 14, Phillips 11, Paniagua 10, Manuel 6, K’Cee Osburn 2, Reina Goana 2.

CAVE SPRINGS 62, GANS 56

The Cave Springs Hornets were able to outplay the Gans Grizzlies at home and head coach Brian Morton’s record is 2-4 so far this season.

The Grizzlies are also off until the county tournament, which gets underway Jan. 2.
