SALLISAW HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

SaUisaw boys and girls high school basketball teams had a good night Tuesday vs. Westville, winning against a weakened boys squad, while the girls walked away with a strong win on the road.

SALLISAW 67, WESTVILLE 38

The Black Diamonds leaned on Jackson Obregon and his game-leading 30 points, but he had help from teammates Broderick Cameron and Kam Dill, who added 11 and seven points during the final outing before Christmas.

The Yellowjackets tried to keep up in the first quarter, scoring 16 points off eight foul shots and two 3-pointers by Even Singleterry, aided by Cale Jacob with his extra bucket. The Sallisaw team scored two points apiece by Cameron, Cooper Cox and two free throws by Braxton Lamb, with Obergon making up the difference with two 3-pointers, three from the free throw line and a bucket for a 17-16 edge.

In the second quarter, Sallisaw almost tripled Westville’s score, with Obregon leading the way with two treys, three 2-pointers and two free throws for 14 points. The Black Diamonds’ advantage was bolstered by Cameron’s four points and two from the line by Max Stump, along with Cooper Carter’s bucket and a lone point from the line by Lamb for 23 points, increasing Sallisaw’s lead 40-24 going into intermission.

Westville didn’t have any better luck in the third quarter, with three players getting a bucket each, which was less than half of the 14-point production from Sallisaw’s bench. Obregon led with a trey and a bucket for five points, followed by four points from Carter, Sim Kilpatrick’s bucket and Lamb hitting another from the line for a 53-30 gap going into the fourth quarter.

Westville couldn’t answer with enough points, and were outscored by six points, with Sallisaw’s Kam Dill getting on the board with seven points, Cameron making a trey, and Cox and Garrett Morgan adding a bucket each for the comfortable 25-point cushion to end the game.

The win improved the Black Diamonds’ record to 4-3, and Sallisaw will return Jan. 2 for the Armstrong Bank Sequoyah County Classic tournament after the holiday break.

SALUSAW 17 23 13 14 -67 WESTVILLE 16 8 6 8 -38 SALUSAW-Jackson Obregon 30, Broderick Cameron 11, Kam Dill 7, Cooper Carter 6, Cooper Cox 4, Braxton Lamb 4, Garrett Morgan 2, Max Stump 2, Sim Kilpatrick 2.

SALLISAW GIRLS 59, WESTVILLE 28

The Lady Diamonds were hungry for retribution after their recent home loss to Muldrow and it showed, with Sallisaw’s scoring leaders Addyson Gream, Molly Carver and EUie Martin each getting to double digits with 18, 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Yellowjackets managed only five points in the first period, which gave the Lady Diamonds a big lead, with Gream going to the paint for five buckets and two from the line for 12 of Sallisaw’s 21 points on the board.

The lopsided lead widened in the second quarter, with Sallisaw adding 17 points compared to Westville’s five points, with Gream and Carver adding six points each. Sallisaw improved its lead to 28 points at 38-10 going into the locker rooms.

The third quarter was more of the same, with EUie Martin making five points, and Carver and Hanna Palmer each draining a trey to make it 52-19 going into the final stanza.

Wth three 3-pointers, Westville finished the game by making two more than Sallisaw in the fourth period, but it wasn’t nearly enough to make a difference, as the Lady Diamonds held a comfortable 29-point cushion at the buzzer.

The Lady Diamonds improved their record to 5-2 for the season, and will be idle during the break before playing in the Armstrong Bank Sequoyah County Classic tournament beginning Jan. 2.
