Cherokee Nation tribal officials announced the planned demolition of the old Marble City School gymnasium, located on the main block of Marble City, at 9:30 a.m. today.
The demolition will be a short kickoff to plans for constructing a new community building for Marble City, which will include some of the historic materials salvaged from the old gymnasium for display in the future community center.
Marble City Mayor Tamara Hibbard said the demolition event is an “exciting” prelude to the long-awaited community building.
“I think this is going to be so great for our community, and we’re just excited it’s finally taking place,” Hibbard said Thursday.
Cherokee Nation tribal leaders, including Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin and Deputy Principal Chief Bryan Warner as well as Councilmen from Sequoyah County E.O. Smith and Daryl Legg, and the MASKA Team (contractors), will hold a brief meet and greet with the community prior to the demolition.
The entire event is expected to last about 30 minutes, according to Cherokee Nation officials.
