The Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on alert for scams due to several recent reports of citizens receiving calls about warrants, and the caller making cash or other demands.
Undersheriff Charles House said the office received several complaints last week from residents who received calls that there was a warrant for their arrest, and the caller made demands for money or gift cards to prevent the resident from being arrested.
The scammers are attempting to make their scam appear more legitimate by using names of deputies who currently work for the Sheriff’s Office, House said.
In some instances, scammers have called from blocked numbers, and then called a second time with a cloned SCSO number showing on Caller ID. In FROM PAGE A1
other instances, they have left voicemails for the resident instructing them to call a number back, and the recording states that it is the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office.
House said the Sheriff’s Office nor the Sequoyah County Courthouse would ever contact individuals via phone regarding a warrant, and would not request money or additional personal information. If you receive a call like this, do not give out any personal information or provide money, House said.
House also said any monies due to the county would go through the Sequoyah County Court Clerk’s office, not the sheriff’s office.
