McCurtain proves too much for Gans on the road

By Jim Cameron Sports Writer

Class A Gans’ boys and girls teams were on the road Tuesday to face Class B McCurtain in games that ultimately ended in one-sided defeats for the visitors.

Class A Gans’ boys and girls teams were on the road Tuesday to face Class B McCurtain in games that ultimately ended in one-sided defeats for the visitors.

McCurtain 75, Gans 51

The boys game was a tale of two halves, with the Bulldogs dominating in the first and the Grizzlies making a valiant effort to come back after intermission. Despite the effort, Gans’ struggles to score made it impossible for them to keep up with the more experienced and bigger McCurtain squad, resulting in a lopsided defeat on the road.

The Bulldogs pulled ahead quickly, outscoring the Grizzlies 20-10 in the first quarter. Gans was able to put up a better fight in the second stanza, scoring 17 points to McCurtain’s 19, but the Bulldogs still held a 12-point lead by the end of the half for a 39-27 advantage.

In the third quarter, the Grizzlies were able to adjust and kept pace with the Bulldogs, with both teams scoring 10 points. But despite their best efforts, the Grizzlies were outscored 26-14 in the fourth frame for the 75-51 final score.

McCurtain had a good night, capitalizing on fastbreak opportunities and exploiting Gans’ struggles to score. Gans’ top scorer was Logan Weese with 17 points, while Marc Tipton added 11. On the other hand, McCurtain’s top scorer was Luke Sandlin, who had a game-high 25 points on the night.

GANS 10 17 10 14 – 51

McCURTAIN 20 19 10 26 – 75

GANS – Logan Weese 17, Marc Tipton 11, Mayson Clifton 8, Nakota White 4, Hunter Walters 3, Josh Brunk 2, Jarrett Fraizer 2, Leland Locust 2.

McCurtain 59, Gans 26

From the opening tipoff, the McCurtain girls were in control, outscoring Gans 23-2 in the first quarter. The Lady Grizzlies struggled to get anything going on offense, and the Lady Bulldogs took advantage by getting points off fastbreaks. Despite Gans’ efforts to adjust in the second stanza, the Lady Grizzlies were only able to put up six points, while McCurtain added another 13 to its lead. By halftime, the Lady Bulldogs had a commanding lead at 36-10.

The second half of the game was more of the same, as McCurtain continued to dominate on both ends of the court. The Lady Bulldogs scored 15 points in the third quarter, while Gans could only manage six. Trailing by 35 heading into the final frame, Gans finally found some relief, outscoring McCurtain 10-8. But it proved too little, too late, as Gans finished on the short end of the 59-26 verdict. It was the 10th win of the season for the Lady Bulldogs.

Hailey Pierson and Brianna Burris were the top scorers for Gans, with 10 and 7 points, respectively. McCurtain’s Avrie Ford led all scorers with 17 points.

GANS   2   8   6 10 – 26

McCURTAIN 23 13 15   8 – 59

GANS – Hailey Pierson 10, Brianna Burris 7, Reina Goana 5, Brighton Dorsey 2, K’cee Osburn 2.
