HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

It was two close games and two different outcomes when intra-county rivals Sallisaw and Roland squared off Friday night after Sallisaw’s homecoming at Paul Post Fieldhouse.

ROLAND 60, SALLISAW 57

Davohn Hall’s right corner 3-pointer with five seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner in the evening’s first game as the Class 3A fifth-ranked Rangers edged the Black Diamonds 60-57 in the conference contest.

Sallisaw (5-7 overall) inbounded the ball with 4.4 seconds remaining but its last-second shot from near half court was no good.

The Rangers (11-1) collected the win in large part to some outstanding performances from Peyton Whisenant and Ashton Peters.

Whisenant led the way for the Rangers, putting up 15 points on the night. Peters was right behind him with 14 points. Meanwhile, Sim Kilpatrick and Brodie Cameron put in solid efforts for the Diamonds, with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Rangers jumped out to a 21-14 lead in the first quarter, thanks to Peters’ eight points and Kyeree Hall’s five. Parker Jackson tried to keep the Diamonds in the game with five points of his own, then the Diamonds mounted a comeback in the second quarter, outscoring the Rangers 16-12 to cut the deficit to two points at halftime.

In the third period, both teams scored 10 points apiece as the Rangers held onto their slim two-point lead going into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter the Rangers put up 17 points to the Diamonds’ 16 and that was enough to secure the win. Carson Wiggins (6 points), Davohn Hall (5) and Peters (3) were the difference makers for the Rangers and Cameron (10 points) and Kilpatrick (4) were the Black Diamonds’ top scorers in the fourth.

Trailing Whisenant and Peters in scoring for Roland were Kyeree Hall (11 points) and Wiggins and Davohn Hall (10 each).

Trailing Kilpatrick and Cameron in scoring for Sallisaw were Parker Jackson and Kam Dill (7 points apiece), Jackson Obregon, Braxton Lamb and Cooper Cox (4 each), Max Stump (3) and Cooper Jackson (2).

SALLISAW 36, ROLAND 29

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds and the Class 3A No. 15 Roland Lady Rangers went toe-to-toe in a thrilling contest with the Lady Diamonds emerging victorious 36-29 behind Addyson Gream’s game-high 26 points.

It was a back-and-forth affair the entire game, with both teams trading blows. The Lady Rangers (7-5 overall) got off to a hot start, thanks to a strong performance from Haven Freeman, who put up five points in the first quarter, and Addison Cole’s four points. But the Lady Diamonds (9-3) kept the game close thanks to Gream, who had seven points, to keep the score close at 9-8 at the end of the period.

In the second stanza the Lady Rangers extended their lead to six points but Gream was up to the challenge. The Sallisaw standout scored four points to keep the deficit manageable at 18-12 going into halftime.

Gream took over in the third period as she scored all 10 of the Lady Diamonds’ points. The Lady Rangers managed to score nine points, which allowed Sallisaw to trim the lead to 27-22. Through three quarters Gream made 10 inside baskets and scored 21 of Sallisaw’s 22 points.

The fourth frame was a defensive battle with the Lady Diamonds limiting the Rangers to a single bucket. Gream scored five points and Kayli Macon and Ellie Martin scored four and three points, respectively, to help Sallisaw to the victory.

Trailing Gream in scoring for Sallisaw in the contest were Macon (5 points), Martin (3) and Emily Gregory (2).

Freeman scored a team-high 13 points and also recording points for Roland were Cole and Kynlei Earnhart (6 each) and Madison Jetton and Jazlynn Tehee (2 apiece).
