Wolverines upend No. 11 Keys at home

The unranked Class 3A Wolverines upended No. 11 Keys Friday night inside Traw Fieldhouse while the Lady Wolverines lost by six points to the Lady Cougars.

The unranked Class 3A Wolverines upended No. 11 Keys Friday night inside Traw Fieldhouse while the Lady Wolverines lost by six points to the Lady Cougars.

KEYS GIRLS 39, VIAN 33

The Lady Cougars (5-8 overall) held off the Lady Wolverines (4-8) in the Big 8 Conference game Friday night at Vian.

In the opening period Vian’s Maci Smith and Avery Wright each scored two points but Keys took a 10-5 lead.

The Lady Cougars led 21-5 at the half after outscoring the Lady Wolverines 11-0 in the second quarter.

Vian trimmed three points (14-11) off the deficit in the third stanza. Smith (5 points) and Rayleigh Terrill (4) each made a pair of field goals for the Lady Wolverines and Skyelar Locust registered three points.

Behind the scoring of Smith (5 points), Wright (4) and Kala Gibbins (3-pointer) Vian outscored the Lady Cougars 14-7 in the final eight minutes.

Smith scored a team-high 12 points in the contest and also recording points for Vian were Wright (6), Locust and Terrill (4 each), Gibbins (3) and Rebel Simon and Annie Neal (2 apiece).

Smith also had four steals, two assists and a blocked shot in the game and Locust registered three steals and also blocked a shot.

VIAN BOYS 36, KEYS 31

The Wolverines (6-5 overall) outscored Class 3A No. 11 Keys (10-3) in two of the final three periods Friday night at home to win the Big 8 Conference contest.

Each team recorded five points in the opening quarter but Vian led 14-8 at the intermission after outscoring the Cougars 9-3 in the second frame. The Wolverines’ Yonsi Grass hit a 3-pointer and registered seven of his game-high 13 points in the second.

Keys trimmed three points (11-8) off the deficit in the third stanza. K’den Richardson and Masyn Wright scored three points apiece for the Wolverines, who took a 22-19 advantage to the fourth.

In the final eight minutes Grass (5 points), Wright (4) and Richardson (3-pointer) provided most of Vian’s points as the Wolverines outscored the visitors 14-12.

Trailing Grass in scoring for Vian in the contest were Wright (9 points), Richardson and Desean Mays (6 each) and Diego Ramos (2).
