Central, Gans open Porum tournament with wins

PORUM – The Central Tigers and Gans Grizzlies emerged victorious in Monday’s opening games of the Porum Tournament, advancing the Sequoyah County teams to Thursday’s semifinals. The weeklong tournament concludes Saturday.

CENTRAL 85, GRAHAM-DUSTIN 23

The Class 2A Central Tigers took an early lead and didn’t look back, outscoring Class B Graham-Dustin 25-5 in the first quarter, with Joseph Lee and Devon Baggs scoring seven points apiece.

In the second stanza, the Tigers scored 22 points to the Chieftains’ nine points, increasing Central’s lead to 33 points at 47-14 by intermission.

The second half was more of the same, with the Tigers outscoring Graham 22-7 in the third period and 16-2 in the fourth frame enroute to the 62-point win.

The game-high scorers were Lee and Jace Mendenhall with 12 points each, followed by Baggs with nine points.

GANS 57, KEOTA 42

In a battle of Class A teams, the Grizzlies (3-7) got out to a nice lead early in the first quarter, finishing with a 16-9 edge over Keota (4-7).

Gans opened up a 38-17 lead by intermission behind the offensive production of Logan Weese and Marc Tipton, who accounted for 15 points and 13 points, respectively, in the first half.

The Lions found their footing in the second half, as Keota outscored Gans, 13-9 to trim the deficit to 47-30 by the end of the third period. The Lions again outscored Gans in the fourth frame, but it was too little too late for Keota enroute to the 57-42 final. Tipton claimed game-high scoring honors with 22 points, followed by Weese with 18. Beau McKenzie paced the Lions with 11 points.
