Just Folks

Aaron Tackett of Sallisaw says his grandmother left him a gift of not only a new life in a place he calls home every day but also a place where he has a job he loves going to every day.

Aaron Tackett of Sallisaw says his grandmother left him a gift of not only a new life in a place he calls home every day but also a place where he has a job he loves going to every day.

Tackett moved to Sallisaw three years ago after his grandmother passed away, he said. She left her property to him and with him being the father of three children with two in school, he said he welcomed the opportunity to move to a new town and look for work, and raise his children.

Since cooking is one of his favorite things to do, Tackett began working for Sherry’s Farmhouse in Sallisaw almost from the time the place opened a year ago and where he calls himself the “AM” cook, he said.

“I love cooking and I love work- ing here. The people are great and cooking breakfast is one of my favorite meals to prepare so it all worked out great for me,” he said. “The food here is great, too,” he said.

Tackett said his favorite breakfast meals to prepare are ham and cheese omelettes with hashbrowns and toast.

“We get a lot of orders for that. Breakfast is our busiest time,” he said. He works the morning shift and sometimes evenings, six days a week. Tackett said his favorite dish to prepare at home is lasagna.

“That’s something that takes a while to prepare but my family loves it. I don’t make it here at work because it’s a family recipe,” he said.

Tackett said he has been cooking since he was 15-years-old. “I wanted to work in a kitchen and I didn’t want to wash dishes, so I learned how to cook,” he said.

When he is not working, Tackett said he enjoys spending time with his girlfriend Katie and his children. They spend a lot of time outdoors with such activities as camping and hiking, he said.

“I enjoy hunting during deer hunting season but most of all, I enjoy spending as much time as I can with my kids and they’re outdoorsy people, which is great for me,” he said.

“I like staying busy. I don’t like to be idle. I enjoy cooking and it’s something I wanted to do for a living. I’m thankful to be living in a place that my kids love and I love working with the people at Sherry’s,” he said.

Although Tackett was born in McAlester, he said he now considers Sequoyah County his home.

“I have a lot of family here in Sequoyah County. They’ve been here for hundreds of years. I remember coming here after my grandmother passed away and thinking it was such a nice town, and now I can call it my home thanks to my grandmother,” he said.
