Rangers top Nowata in NEO tournament finals

By Lea Lessley Sports Writer

The Class 3A fifth-ranked Rangers improved to 15-1 for the season Saturday night after downing 2A No. 20 Nowata (125) 74-47 Saturday night in the championship game of the NEO (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College) Tournament in Miami.

The Class 3A fifth-ranked Rangers improved to 15-1 for the season Saturday night after downing 2A No. 20 Nowata (125) 74-47 Saturday night in the championship game of the NEO (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College) Tournament in Miami.

“Early in the championship game I thought we played real good,” Roland head coach Ed Lewis said. “We got off to a good start and got a good lead and then we were just able to hang on to it and finish the game that way.

“Each night we had a couple of boys that did pretty good. The night before (61-46 win over Fairland) Peyton Whisenant had a really good ballgame and Ashton (Peters) hit a couple of big 3’s that we needed. In the first ballgame (70-38 win over Afton) Davohn and Kyeree (Hall) both had real good games and Carson (Wiggins) has just been himself and really played well all three games. That’s our starting five and I was pretty well pleased and we had some other kids who came off the bench and had some productivity that way also.

“I was pretty pleased with the outcome and being on the road and spending the night up there and everything I thought they handled it really well.” ROLAND 74, NOWATA 47 (SATURDAY) The Rangers erupted for 26 points in the opening period of Saturday night’s title game on their way to the convincing 7447 win over the Ironmen inside NEO’s College Gym.

Roland outscored Nowata 2610 in the first eight minutes behind the scoring of Carson Wiggins (9 points), Kyeree Hall (6), Davohn Hall (4) and Buck Triplett (3-pointer).

In the second stanza the Rangers added two points (19-17) to their advantage to lead 45-27 at the half. Kyeree Hall registered eight of his game-high 22 points in the quarter, Davohn Hall made a pair of 3-pointers and Wiggins added four points.

Roland increased its lead in the third (16-11) and fourth (13-9) frames. Peyton Whisenant and Davohn Hall (5 points apiece) were the Rangers’ top scorers in the third and Kyeree Hall (6 points), Whisenant (4) and Davohn Hall (3-pointer) led Roland in scoring in the fourth.

Trailing Kyeree Hall in scoring for Roland in the contest were Davohn Hall (18 points), Wiggins (13), Whisenant (12), Triplett (5) and Ashton Peters (4).

ROLAND 61, FAIRLAND 46 (FRIDAY) After being tied 27-all at the half Friday night Roland (14-1 overall) outscored Class 2A Fairland (10-5) 22-8 in the third period of the tournament semifinal contest against the Owls, who are coached by former Roland girls’ coach Bobby Walters.

Carson Wiggins and Peyton Whisenant registered seven and six points, respectively, in the first stanza to help the Rangers go in front 15-14.

Despite Wiggins’s three 2-point field goals the Owls erased the deficit (13-12) in the second period.

In the third quarter Whisenant knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 of his game-high 28 points and Hall (7 points) and Ashton Peters (3-pointer) also recorded points for the Rangers, who outscored Fairland 22-8.

Whisenant made four 2-point baskets in the final eight minutes as Roland added a point (12-11) to its advantage.

Trailing Whisenant in scoring for the Rangers in the game were Wiggins (15 points), Davohn Hall (11), Peters (3) and Kyeree Hall and Buck Triplett (2 each).

Roland boys 70, Afton 39 (Thursday) Kyeree and Davohn Hall scored a combined 41 points Thursday night in Miami as the Class 3A fifth-ranked Rangers (13-1) downed 2A Afton (6-8) in their NEO Tournament opener.

In the first stanza Kyeree and Davohn totaled 10 and five points, respectively, to help the Rangers take a 19-12 lead.

Roland led 33-23 at the break after increasing its advantage by three (1411) in the second quarter. Kyeree Hall (5 points), Buck Triplett and Raesean Perryman each hit a 3-pointer for the Rangers in the period.

Davohn Hall (9 points), Peyton Whisenant and Triplett (3 each) were the leading scorers in the third frame for the Rangers, who outscored the Eagles 19-11.

In the final eight minutes Kyeree (6 points) and Davohn Hall (4) registered 10 of Roland’s 18 points.

Trailing Kyeree (21 points) and Davohn Hall (20) in scoring for Roland in the game were Triplett (8), Whisenant and Raesean Perryman (5 each), Carson Wiggins (4), Ashton Peters and Paul Johnson (2 apiece) and Desean Cruse, Cason Perryman and Nate Criswell (1 each).
