Black Diamonds have good showing in Pryor Tournament

By Jim Cameron Sports Writer

PRYOR — Fueled by the one-two scoring punch of Jackson Obregon and Parker Jackson in the first two games of the Pryor Invitational Tournament, the Sallisaw Black Diamonds barreled into the Jan. 31 finals with a comfortable win against Oologah in the opening round and a hard-fought win over top-10 ranked Ketchum in the semifinals.

But in the finals against Sequoyah Claremore, which had lost only once in 16 games, Sallisaw found the going tough in finishing as the tournament’s runner-up.

Sallisaw 65, Oologah 52

Obregon and Jackson combined for 38 points to propel the Black Diamonds to a 65-52 win over the Oologah Mustangs in the tournament’s opening round.

The Sallisaw boys were a little slow out of the gate, but rocketed out front in the second stanza for a 39-29 cushion by halftime thanks to Obregon and Jackson, who scored 22 and 16 points, respectively, on the night.

The Black Diamonds increased their lead in the third period for a 54-39 advantage going into the final frame.

Oologah managed to outscore Sallisaw in the fourth quarter, but the Black Diamonds’ advantage held up down the stretch to advance to the semifinals.

Joining Obregon and Jackson in double figures was Sim Kilpatrick with 11 p o i n t s . Oologah’s top offensive players were Jaden Tanner with 14 points and Eli Despain with 13.

Sallisaw used a fourth-quarter rally against Class 2A sixth-ranked Ketchum for a come-from-behind 46-40 win in the tournament semifinals.

Sallisaw relied on Obregon with 15 points and Jackson with 12 points on the night to vanquish the Warriors and advance to the finals.

Ketchum jumped out to a shortlived 12-9 lead in the first quarter, but Sallisaw pulled to within a point at 21-20 in the second stanza.

After an evenly matched third period, the Black Diamonds found a new gear in the fourth frame to outscore Ketchum by nine points and stamp their ticket to the championship game.

Ketchum was led by Rowdy Mullin with 13 points.

The Eagles (15-1) never trailed on their way to victory, and owned a 27-13 margin by halftime.

Sallisaw managed to outdistance Sequoyah 14-10 in the third period, but the Eagles padded their lead in the fourth frame for the 17-point win.
