HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

The Gore Pirates played host to Webbers Falls on Friday, winning 68-39 in their basketball homecoming game. The Lady Pirates were not so lucky, falling to the Lady Warriors, 53-45.

GORE 68, WEBBERS FALLS 39

The Webbers Falls defense struggled to contain Gore’s Noah Cooper, who made eight points in the first quarter of the game enroute to a game-high 19 points, helping the Pirates earn a 12-6 lead early.

The Warriors (8-10) were able to improve in the second period, outscoring Gore, 14-12, with help from two three-pointers by Stryker Chappell.

At halftime, Gore (14-3) owned a 24-20 lead, but by the end of the third period, Gore had added another 13 points to swell their tenuous lead to 48-32 heading into the fourth frame.

In the final quarter, the Pirates continued their secondhalf barrage, outscoring the Warriors by 14 points enroute to the convincing 68-39 final score.

Cooper was supported in double figures by Jackson Duke with 12 points, while the top offensive weapons for Webbers Falls were Jaxon Swearingen with 11 points and Chappell with 10.

Webbers Falls 6 14 12 7 – 39 Gore 12 12 25 21 – 68 WEBBERS FALLS – Jaxon Swearingen 11, Stryker Chappell 10, Luke Pierce 7, Maddux Shelby 4, Blake Rowe 3, Riley Ogg 2, Caden Dishman 2.

GORE – Noah Cooper 19, Jackson Duke 12, Ben Kirkpatrick 8, Keigan Reid 7, Aidan Dickerson 7, Journey Shells 6, Bryon McDuffie 3.

WEBBERS FALLS 53, GORE 45

The Webbers Falls Lady Warriors had their hands full for most of the game against the Lady Pirates, but the visitors were able to pull ahead in the third period then held on down the stretch for an eight-point win that was closer than the final score indicated.

Anistyn Garner and Bridgette Baer contributing six points apiece for Webbers Falls in the first quarter for a 14-11 edge.

But Gore was nothing if not consistent versus the Lady Warriors. The Lady Pirates scored 11 points in each of the first three quarters, then added 12 more in the final period to keep Webbers Falls on its toes.

By the end of the second stanza, Gore (511) pulled to within a point at 23-22, but the Lady Warriors (14-4) gave themselves some breathing room in the third period, outdistancing their rivals, 16-11.

Webbers Falls owned a 39-33 advantage going into the final frame, but Teralynn Colston shouldered most of the scoring burden in the fourth frame enroute to a game-high 21 points.

Colston made Gore pay a hefty price every time the Lady Pirates fouled her, as she sank 11 of her 14 attempts from the charity stripe, which paced the Lady Warriors, 14-12 in the fourth quarter, holding off any Gore rally.

Garner aided Colston’s effort with an additional 18 points for Webbers Falls, while Gore was led by Kennedy Williams with 17 points on the night. Webbers Falls 14 9 16 14 – 53 Gore 11 1111 12 – 45 WEBBERS FALLS – Teralynn Colston 21, Anistyn Garner 18, Samantha Griffith 6, Bridgette Baer 6, Abby Pense 2.

GORE – Kennedy Williams 17, Emily Daily 8, Oakley Thorton 6, Lindsey Pierce 5, Kima Wells 3, Andi Summerlin 2, Rayleigh Moore 2.

Gore’s Noah Cooper goes for a jump shot against Webbers Falls’ Jaxon Swearingen during Gore’s 68-39 win Friday night.
