Class 4A Sallisaw eeked out two wins Saturday when Class 3A Spiro visited Paul Post Fieldhouse, with the boys earning a 57-53 victory, while the girls prevailed in overtime, 48-42.

SALLISAW 57, SPIRO 53

Sallisaw’s defense held Spiro in check in the first quarter, outdistancing the Bulldogs, 17-9, with six Sallisaw players registering points for head coach Chadd Gehrke.

In the second stanza, Sallisaw again outscored Spiro by eight points, with Broderick Cameron making two three-pointers to propel the Black Diamonds to a 3216 cushion by intermission.

After the break, Spiro (6-14) began an uphill battle to close the deficit, as Zander Riggs scored 10 points for the Bulldogs for a 19-13 edge in the third period to trim Sallisaw’s lead to 45-35 going into the fourth frame.

In the fourth stanza, Sallisaw (8-10) was outscored again, 18-12, with the Bulldogs’ Brycen Graham making nine points, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide, as the Black Diamonds withstood Spiro’s late surge.

Sallisaw’s top offensive players were Cameron and Jackson Obregon with 15 and 14 points, respectively, but Riggs was the game’s top scorer with 24 points.

A f t e r f a l l i n g behind 12-9 in the opening quarter, the Lady Bulldogs (9-11) fell behind 20-11 by halftime.

In the second half, Addyson Gream came alive for Sallisaw, scoring seven of Sallisaw’s 10 points in the third period to outpace Spiro, which helped kick off the process of the Lady Diamonds digging out of their first-half deficit.

Down 28-21 to start the final frame, Gream went to work for Sallisaw’s offense, scoring 12 more points. Ellie Martin then sank the game-tying bucket at the buzzer for a 42-42 stalemate at the end of regulation.

In overtime, Sallisaw’s defense held Spiro scoreless, while Martin put four more points on the board, and Hannah Palmer added two free throws to give the Lady Diamonds (12-6) the six-point win.

Gream’s 27 points led all scorers, complemented by Martin’s 12 points. Spiro’s top scorer was Kaylee Martin with 14 points.
